Gas Prices Dip Slightly Across Florida

August 21, 2017 - 8:30am

While gas prices traditionally increase in the second half of August, motorists across the Sunshine State saw prices at the pump decrease slightly in recent days.

AAA released a study on Monday showing gas prices in Florida averaged $2.25 per gallon on Sunday, down two cents from the week before. That’s below the national average of $2.34 per gallon on Sunday, down from $2.35 a week ago.

Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA and the Auto Club Group, insisted on Monday that motorists should not get accustomed to the lower prices.

"Robust fuel supplies pushed retail prices lower last week, but this downward trend may not last much longer,” Jenkins said. "Gas prices will face upward pressure this week due to a series of refinery issues in the Gulf Coast. Popular markets for the solar eclipse may also see higher pump prices, due to increased demand in the area, which could leave some gas stations low on fuel."

As usual, the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton market had the most expensive gas in the state with an average of $2.35 per gallon. But, with college students returning to school, university towns had some of the most expensive gas in Florida with the Tallahassee and Gainesville markets both seeing an average of $2.30 per gallon.

The least expensive gas in Florida can be found in Tampa and Orlando where prices averaged $2.17 per gallon. After that, the least expensive gas can be found in the Fort Myers-Cape Coral market where the average is $2.21 per gallon.

With much of the nation going to be impacted by Monday's eclipse, Jenkins advised motorists to be careful on the roads.

"AAA discourages motorists from watching the solar eclipse while driving," Jenkins said. "Motorists should realize other drivers may be attempting to watch the eclipse and drive at the same time. To help prevent trouble, reduce your speed and keep additional space between you and other vehicles. The better option is to find a safe place to park, and then observe the eclipse."

With Labor Day, the traditional end of summer celebrations, in sight, average gas prices in Florida have ranged from a high of $2.47 per gallon in April to a low of $2.13 per gallon in the middle of July. So far this year, gas prices have been lower in Florida than across the nation. The highest national average was $2.42 per gallon back in April while the lowest was $2.23 per gallon at the start of July.
