Florida Voices: Independence Day

July 1, 2010 - 6:00pm

Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp, Republican candidate for attorney general

As we approach this Fourth of July, I want to wish you and your family a great Independence Day weekend. Our freedom is what makes America the greatest country in the history of the world. This weekend -- we celebrate our freedom.

The freedoms we hold dear have recently been challenged. Some in Washington are attempting to strip us of the rights guaranteed under the United States Constitution. We must stand strong. As President Abraham Lincoln once said -- "We the People are the rightful masters of both Congress and the Courts -- not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."

On behalf of Cyndie and our son Jackson, I wish you a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.

Attorney General Bill McCollum, Republican candidate for governor

The freedom we are guaranteed as citizens of this great nation is an incredible blessing that should never be taken for granted.

As we celebrate this Fourth of July, I encourage every American to thank the men and women who have risked their lives to protect our country and our freedom both domestic and abroad. It is a privilege to call America our home, and we should always be proud of our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Holly Benson, Republican candidate for attorney general

On this Fourth of July, people across Florida will come together in celebration of our countrys Declaration of Independence and the establishment of our most fundamental rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Our commitment on this day should be to commemorate the stand our nation took and remember and pray for the brave men and women who defend our nations borders and the rights of those who call it their home. Let us all keep in mind the people who practice a day-to-day commitment to defend our nations freedom, and let us be thankful for the service they provide for our country and our safety.

Sen. John Thrasher, R-Jacksonville, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida

As we commemorate our Declaration of Independence, America remembers the day it was founded. And that we, as citizens of this great nation, are free to enjoy the liberties it provides us, as well as the right to pass them on to our children and our childrens children.

This is a day for all Americans to take pride in remembering the will and the courage it took on behalf of our forefathers to guarantee this nations freedom and that of the generations of Americans to follow.

As we celebrate the anniversary of our freedom as a country, it is important to reflect on how this has translated into our enduring freedom as a people. As a veteran, I have seen firsthand the struggles that the protection of our liberty demands, and I am thankful each and every day for the freedom that this country allows its citizens to live, succeed and rejoice in.

This Fourth of July, I hope all Floridians remember the sacrifices made by the brave members of our armed forces who so diligently protect the liberties we hold so dear, and I encourage all Floridians to celebrate our independence, which is so much a part of the heart and soul of this nation.

State CFO Alex Sink, Democratic gubernatorial candidate

The Fourth of July is a wonderful time to get together with family and friends to celebrate our nations independence, and fireworks are a historic part of this celebration. However, even sparklers can be dangerous if used incorrectly, so I encourage Floridians to celebrate with caution. Also, I thank all of our states emergency responders who are working extra-hard to protect their neighbors and communities this holiday weekend.
