Denise Grimsley Runs for Agriculture Commissioner in 2018

February 1, 2017 - 10:45am

On Wednesday, state Sen. Denise Grimsley, R-Lake Placid, filed to run for Florida Agriculture commissioner as she hopes to replace fellow Republican Adam Putnam who faces term limits in 2018.

Grimsley played up her background in agriculture, ranching, nursing, business and politics as she threw her hat in the ring.

“I offer my candidacy to serve as Florida’s agriculture commissioner as a continuation of the public service that has meant so much in my life,” Grimsley said. “I began my working life with a passion for nursing and helping people in difficult situations. I continue that today as a hospital administrator. I’ve operated our family businesses and know treating the customer well and with respect is key to any success.

“We are the sum of our experiences, and I offer my candidacy to continue the principles of conservative public service I have followed in my career, both in the private sector and in the Florida Legislature,” Grimsley added. ‘Serving on the Cabinet as Florida’s commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services would be a tremendous honor, and I look forward to earning our Republican Party’s nomination and competing for the general election in November 2018.

“Florida has many challenges in our agriculture industry, yet we have so many more exciting opportunities,” Grimsley continued. “We will continue to fight for a smart statewide water policy, we will protect our environment and blessed Florida resources, and we will pursue expansion of the over two million jobs Florida agriculture provides our state. I offer my broad life experience and an optimistic vision to achieve so much for our state."

First elected to the House in 2004, Grimsley is a veteran of the Legislature. She moved up the ranks on the Appropriations, Agriculture and Health Care Committees, rising to become the first woman to chair the  House Appropriations Committee. Facing term limits in the House in 2012, she was elected to the Florida Senate, serving as deputy majority leader from 2014-2016. Last year, she was reelected without opposition.

Grimsley current chairs the General Government Appropriations Subcommittee and is the vice chair on the Ethics and Elections Committee. She also serves on the Agriculture Committee.

Born in Polk County, Grimsley represents all of DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Highlands, Okeechobee and parts of Charlotte, Lee and Polk counties  in the Senate. Grimsley is the first major candidate to announce for a statewide office in 2018.

An anti-gun, anti-NRA, Commissioner of Agriculture to head up the Concealed Weapons & Firearms licensing program? I don't think so!!!!!!!!

Looking at her picture makes me think she would scare the strawberry's from growing, the corn would hide in their husks and nothing would get done. Maybe we have another choice.

Can you spell "career politician" that is exactly what this is. She knows nothing about the job except that it has a BIG salary.

Denise WHO? Just WHAT has Ms. Grimsley done for Florida's taxpayers since her involvement in government? Nothing that I can recall, can anyone?

could think of few people less qualified to be Ag Commish...classic.

What has Sen. Denise Grimsley done in the area of consumer protection?
