CVA Ramps Up the Pressure on Bill Nelson to Support Neil Gorsuch

A conservative group is ramping up the pressure on U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., to support President Donald Trump’s nomination of  Neil Gorsuch to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States.

On Tuesday, conservative-leaning Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) announced that it would launch a direct mail campaign urging Nelson to support Gorsuch. CVA is also launching similar efforts in other states as it tries to drum up support for the nomination.

So far, Nelson has remained neutral on Gorsuch despite having supported him before. CVA Florida Coalitions Director Diego Echeverri noted that Nelson backed Gorsuch being  nominated to the Tenth Circuit Court back in 2006.

“Judge Gorsuch is fair, qualified, and experienced, which is why Senator Nelson supported him in 2006,” Echeverri said on Tuesday. “There is no legitimate reason for Senator Nelson to delay Gorsuch's Supreme Court confirmation process. This should be an easy decision.

“The Florida veteran community is deeply invested in ensuring that the next Supreme Court justice will respect the Constitution they fought and sacrificed to defend,” Echeverri added. “CVA will continue mobilizing our activists to push Senator Nelson to support Neil Gorsuch until the moment Gorsuch is confirmed to the bench."

CVA’s mailer stresses Gorsuch’s support for following the Constitution as the Founding Fathers intended and insisted he supports the “rule of law” and “won’t legislate from the bench.”

Nelson is garnering much pressure from both sides as Republicans and conservatives urge him to support Gorsuch while Democrats and liberals press him to oppose the nomination.

So far, Nelson has remained non-committal on whether or not he would back the nomination.

“The confirmation of a Supreme Court justice is an awesome responsibility that I gladly accept," Nelson said at the end of January when Trump nominated Gorsuch. "I will base my decision on a full examination of Judge Gorsuch’s judicial record and his responses to senators’ questions.”
