Congressional Democrats are turning to freshman U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, D-Fla., for guidance on seniors issues.

On Friday, U.S. Reps. Doris Matsui of California and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, the two chairs of the House Democratic Caucus’ Senior Task Force, named Crist as a vice chair along with U.S. Reps.  Joyce Beatty of Ohio, Debbie Dingell of Michigan, Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico and  Lucille Roybal-Allard of California.

“The mission of the Congressional Task Force on Seniors is to promote and raise the public’s awareness of policies in Congress that would impact the health and well-being of America’s seniors,” the group notes. “The Congressional Task Force on Seniors will accomplish this mission by focusing on four principles that are critically important to aging Americans: financial security; affordable, reliable health-care; quality of life as people age; and access to long-term care services that allow seniors to age with dignity.”

"We are pleased to announce five outstanding new vice chairs who are committed to bringing the energy and resolve we need to defend against Republican attacks on seniors’ financial security and quality of life,"  Matsui and Schakowsky announced. "Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are lifelines for older Americans and their families. The Seniors Task Force stands ready to fight against attempts to take away these essential programs. Together, we will work to protect the ability of seniors to live with dignity in their communities."

For his part, Crist welcomed his new assignment.

"Fighting for our seniors – strengthening Social Security and Medicare – is one of my top priorities as a congressman,” Crist said. “I am honored by this opportunity to serve as a leader on the House Democrats’ Seniors Task Force, working to make sure our elders and loved ones are respected, well cared for, and the benefits they’ve earned are protected in the golden years of life.”

After being elected governor and holding two other statewide offices as a Republican, Crist left the GOP in 2010 to run for the U.S. Senate with no part affiliation. Following that loss, Crist joined the Democrats and ran for governor in 2014. After losing that race, Crist bounced back last year to defeat then U.S. Rep. David Jolly, R-Fla., to represent parts of Pinellas County in Congress. Jolly is a possible opponent for Crist in 2018.

Congressman Crist is knowledgeable about senior issues. I am sure he will provide leadership in making sure seniors are respectfully represented in areas listed. As a clinical social worker and one of his constituents in Pinellas County, I am concerned about healthcare and mental health for seniors. I am delighted that Congressman Crist represents me in Congress.

Uh, that isn't even a real committee, not a bi-partisan committee, heck, it's not even a sub-committe. It's busy work courtesy of pelosi who was left with a list of people that still needed one more assignment. Poor Charlie.

Yeah that's what we need. A guy who spends part of every day on tanning bed leading the nation on health issues.
