Veteran U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, a Democrat, appears headed for another term in Congress. With financial figures in from the second quarter of 2010, Hastings has raised more than $610,000 and has slightly less than $300,000 in the bank.
Republican challenger Bernard Sansaricq has raised $42,793 -- with $20,274 of that from individual contributions, $4,675 from PACs and $13,415 coming from the candidate himself. Sansaricq has an impressive background: he was president of the Haitian Senate and has worked on human rights issues. But his campaign has been burning through money -- as of June 30, Sansaricqs team has less than $500 cash on hand.
Its a tough district for any Republican to carry in the first place -- John Kerry and Barack Obama carried it with more than 75 percent each -- and if Sansaricq wants to upset Hastings, he needs to greatly increase his fund-raising efforts. Until then, this race seems a lock for Hastings.
