Carlos Curbelo: Tax Reform Helps Small Businesses

February 22, 2017 - 8:30am

From his new seat on the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla,, is making the case that tax reform helps small businesses.

Curbelo was featured by House Republicans in their latest “Tax Reform Tuesday” Web video.

“Greetings from South Florida. I’m Carlos Curbelo and I represent this community in Congress,” the South Florida Republican says in the video which was also released in Spanish. “We House Republicans are starting our work on tax reform and tax reform is about people. We want to build a simpler, flatter, and more fair tax code, so that people like these behind me can dedicate more time to their families and can have more resources to get ahead instead of just getting by. So that small business owners like the family who came from Cuba decades ago and struggled to build this wonderful restaurant can invest more in the community, provide better jobs, and pay their employees more.

“That’s what tax reform is all about and that’s why we House Republicans are 100 percent committed to making sure we build the kind of tax code that the American people deserve,” Curbelo adds. “One that will lead to a more prosperous future for every family.”

The South Florida sophomore is one of the newer members of the powerful Ways and Means Committee. He was named to it by U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, the chairman of the committee, last month. Curbelo sits on the House Human Resource Subcommittee which is under the Ways and Means Committee’s umbrella.

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., who campaigned for Curbelo against former U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia, D-Fla., praised the South Florida Republican when he was named to the Ways and Means Committee last month.

“The House Committee on Ways and Means has broad jurisdiction over many issues Carlos has made a priority in Congress, including tax policy, free and fair trade, healthcare, and entitlement reform,” Ryan said. “Carlos’ appointment makes him the only South Florida Republican on the Committee. His proven work ethic and diligence in finding common sense solutions to some of the most serious issues facing our country will make him a great member of the esteemed Committee on Ways and Means.”

While he defeated Garcia in 2014 and 2016, Curbelo is considered a top target for Democrats in 2018. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton carried Curbelo’s South Florida distract over Republican Donald Trump back in November.
