Now starting his second term in Congress, U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., was named to the powerful U.S. House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday. The Ways and Means Committee is one of the most important bodies in the House, overseeing tax policy.

U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, announced that Curbelo, U.S. Rep.  David Schweikert, R-Ariz., and U.S. Rep.  Jackie Walorski, R-Ind., were joining his committee on the Republicans side.

“David, Jackie, and Carlos are excellent additions to the Ways and Means Committee,” Brady said. “They are joining our team at a historic moment as we move forward on pro-growth tax reform, repealing Obamacare, and ensuring Americans finally have access to affordable care.

“Each of our new members has the perfect mix of policy expertise and real world experience,” Brady added. “Most importantly, they understand exactly how the decisions we make at our committee impact the lives of people across our country.

“As a former small business owner in South Florida, Carlos understands the challenges our Main Street businesses face daily,” Brady continued. “He will be a strong advocate for America’s workers and local job creators.

“With a full roster, Ways and Means Republicans are ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work on President-elect Trump’s and the American people’s top priorities,” Brady said in conclusion.

For his part, Curbelo said his new assignment would help him be a larger voice for South Florida on Capitol Hill.

“I'm honored to be selected by my colleagues to serve as a member of the powerful Committee on Ways and Means in the new Congress,” Curbelo noted on Thursday. “This position will allow me to advocate for many issues of importance to my constituents and our South Florida community. I look forward to working with my Republican and Democratic colleagues to advance bipartisan solutions that will better the lives of those in my district and across the country.”

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., who campaigned for Curbelo against Garcia, cheered the news.

“The House Committee on Ways and Means has broad jurisdiction over many issues Carlos has made a priority in Congress, including tax policy, free and fair trade, healthcare, and entitlement reform,” Ryan said. “Carlos’ appointment makes him the only South Florida Republican on the Committee. His proven work ethic and diligence in finding common sense solutions to some of the most serious issues facing our country will make him a great Member of the esteemed Committee on Ways and Means.”
