Bernie Sanders' Our Revolution Gets Busy in Florida

Our Revolution--a group with ties to democratic socialist U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.-- is placing a few bets in Florida as it looks ahead to 2020.

With Sanders considering another presidential bid in 2020, two of the Our Revolution affiliates are backing state Rep. David Richardson in next month’s primary as Democrats look to flip the seat currently held by retiring U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla. Richardson has emerged as the chief rival in the Democratic primary to former U.S. HHS Sec. Donna Shalala who served as president of the University of Miami.

“Two of the local Our Revolution groups just endorsed my campaign for Congress – Our Revolution 305 in Miami and Our Revolution Puerto Rico!” Richardson announced in an email sent out by his campaign on Thursday. “Our Revolution was founded to continue the grassroots movement of Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and fight to advance our progressive agenda, and I am so proud to have the support of these two bottom-up groups.”

That’s now the only key race in Florida that Our Revolution is taking sides in. Back in March, Our Revolution threw its support behind Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

“Andrew Gillum is a driven public servant who has already shown his commitment to the working people of Florida,” said Our Revolution President Nina Turner when the group endorsed Gillum. “He has fought tirelessly for reforms like expanding social service funding, developing an advanced job retraining program for underrepresented workers, and investing in community policing and re-entry programs. Our Revolution is proud to support his campaign because we believe in his ability to bring bold progressive policies to all Floridians.”

Our Revolution is also backing other Democrats across the Sunshine State including businessman and Democrat activist Sanjay Patel who is offering an underdog challenge to U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, R-Fla. The group is backing Alex Heeren, the Democratic candidate looking to flip the state House seat currently held by term limited Republican state Rep. Larry Ahern who represents parts of Pinellas County.

I simply want a return on investment (ROI), when I pay Uncle Sam. No one seems to feel that way IMHO, and at 52 I have a growing fear that Social Security and Medicare won't exist in the next 15 to 20 years. I got my first job at 16, and have been working full time since age 20. I expect an ROI on that too !! A Scandinavian style socialist style might be just what is needed now. We have money for a now 17 year old war, but not enough to take care of citizens that have paid into the system for decades?? Bullspit !!! BTW I'm a $60,000 a year real estate appraiser, that is self employed that pays quarterly taxes without a matching 401K or employer health care. I'm not lazy, I work !!!!

It’s not other people’s money, its the 1%. If you’re in that category you should be willing to pay for the great America we already live in to maintain it. Your businesses will start to decline if you don’t fork over some cash to keep the streets, highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, railways, etc up to date and maintained. This is your old house and it’s falling apart. So are our public schools because the facilities are run down and the teachers are under paid. Our healthcare needs work too. When you get to Medicare age you’ll understand how much single payer means to you. Socialist Security too, means you don’t need to take care of mommy and daddy when they get old. Many wealthy people say, “you can only eat out so much, stay in the finest hotels and travel so much. We live in a nice home in a gated community. Drive two or three great cars, have a weekend retreat or summer home. There’s more to life than this. I’ll pay more taxes, which I can afford to better the lives of my fellow citizens that don’t have the good fortune we have.” And it is “good fortune.” You could be struck by my disease, accident, or just been born somewhere else or in another of life’s many troubling situations. Some people call it, “But for the grace of god...” As a country we’ve made some bad choices lately. We need to get back to true Democratic ideals.

Almost the same argument was made by a man named Vladimir Lenin, names changed but the basic message is the same.

Importing the Bernie Sander's Socialist agenda to Florida? I would hope our electorate is smart enough to know the redistribution of wealth to those who have done little to improve their lives by schooling, skill set development, etc. to make the marketable, will bring down a vibrant Florida economy. To paraphrase Margaret Thatcher warning about the ills afflicting Great Britain entitlement mentality, "at some point your run out of other peoples (taxpayers) money'. Sad.

Yea, the only acceptable wealth redistribution is the one your god reagan did that allowed 8 families to be richer than 90% of America. FDR is rolling in his grave

yes and those 8 families have created jobs by the millions which powered our economy out of Carter’s dismal reign. Don’t be so green eyed with envy of those who were successful, just go to work and you will find it much more gratifying than trying to redistribute wealth of others.

Exactly

James 5:1-6 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.
