Former state lawmaker Alex Diaz de la Portilla insists he actually knows where he's running for office this time, despite an egregious error on his website indicating he's running in a district that doesn't exist.
On Tuesday, Sunshine State News noticed an interesting quirk to DLP's website where he is broadcasting his plans to run for former Sen. Frank Artiles' seat in Florida's 40th Senate District.
The problem: the district DLP had plastered on his website doesn't exist anymore. It is outdated, thanks to a 2015 Florida Supreme Court ruling which redrew all 40 of Florida's Senate districts.
In an ironic twist, the old district DLP was publicizing used to belong to his brother, Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, before it was redrawn.
SSN brought the discrepancy to DLP's attention late Tuesday afternoon.
The former Senate Majority Leader was quick to respond after noticing the error, but instead pivoted to his storied past as a state lawmaker.
"Factoid: which candidate has represented more people in SD 40 than ALL other candidates Combined?" he asked.
"The one with the wrong map?" POLITICO's Marc Caputo shot back.
The incorrect map was quickly replaced with the current SD40 map, which covers parts of Miami-Dade County including the Kendall area.
DLP will face off against State Rep. Jose Felix Diaz for the Republican primary nomination, and the back-and-forth between the two has already begun to turn ugly.
Both candidates have already unleashed a flurry of full-page color mailers to swing GOP voters in their favor, but Diaz is working with a slightly larger war chest, with nearly $1 million to spend.
As for now, it appears DLP is running in the correct district after all.
A special primary will be held July 25. The special election will be held Sept. 27.
