AFP Takes Aim at Bill Nelson on Tax Reform

Americans for Prosperity’s (AFP) Florida chapter is looking to turn up the heat on U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., on taxes. First elected to the Senate in 2000, Nelson is up for a fourth term next year.

AFP will launch a digital ad campaign starting on Tuesday, urging Floridians to reach out to Nelson to support tax reform. This marks the second time this month, AFP has urged a member of the Florida delegation to back tax reform. At the start of June, AFP launched a digital campaign to urge U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., to oppose raising the border adjustment tax.

Chris Hudson, AFP’s director in Florida, weighed in on why his group was running the new campaign.

“Floridians deserve a tax system that treats everyone fairly and helps grow the economy,” Hudson said. “The last thing Americans want is a system that continues to raise taxes. Senator Nelson has spoken out in favor of tax reform, but he has also advocated for raising taxes. Now is the time for him to use his leadership position on the Senate Finance Committee to un-rig the system for Florida taxpayers.”

AFP noted that Congress has ignored major tax reform for more than thirty years even as federal tax code continued to expand, costing Americans almost 9 billion hours and almost $410 billion.

Now 74, Nelson is a veteran of Florida politics. He was elected to the Legislature back in 1972 before making the jump to the U.S. House in 1980. After an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 1990, Nelson bounced back to be elected state treasurer and insurance commissioner in 1994. In 2000, Nelson was elected to the Senate. Gov. Rick Scott has opened the door to challenging Nelson in 2018.
