Today Big Brother gets that little bit bigger. He gets to shield us from harm, suppress our right to know. Apparently, on the lips of a terrorist, the English language is too politically incorrect for the American people to handle.
So, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch tells us that later today when the FBI releases those edited transcripts of the 911 calls made by the Orlando nightclub shooter to the police, the editing will include certain deletions.
References to Islamic terrorism will be removed.
When asked why, Lynch responded, "to avoid revictimizing."
"What we're not going to do is further proclaim this man's pledges of allegiance to terrorist groups, and further his propaganda," Lynch said about the decision to redact."
However, Lynch promised the FBI will release on Monday what they believe to be "the substance of his conversations" in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday morning.
The substance? Oh, come on.
When CNN's Dana Bash asked Lynch to be a little more specific about the tapes, the attorney general said this:
"You know, as we have said earlier, he talked about his pledges of allegiance to a terrorist group. He talked about his motivations for why he was claiming at that time he was committing this horrific act.
"He talked about American policy in some ways. The reason why we're going to limit these transcripts is to avoid revictimizing those who went through this horror. But it will contain the substance of his conversations. And there were three conversations between this killer and negotiators."
Does anybody else smell a political motive in an election year behind the Obama administration's gag on public records?
By all accounts, the victims of the Pulse nightclub horror are dealing with far worse images than anything killer Omar Mateen could have said on the phone to police. The victims were there. They lived it. They saw it. And they see it over and over again. Phone call transcripts would be child's play.
Taking out references to Islamic terrorism? There is no defensible or legal reason to do this. None whatsoever.
Nor is there an acceptable reason to disregard the First Amendment. The full content of Omar Mateen's messages belong in the public domain.
Who will challenge this unconscionable interference?
