COUNTERPOINT: Parental Consent Bill Fraught with Danger for Pregnant Girls

Another year, another opportunity for Florida to conjure up an abortion bill to shame a woman or scare the daylights out of a girl.

Rep. Erin Grall, R-Vero Beach, claims her House Bill 265 will keep pregnant girls under 18 safer because they will have to get their parents' written permission before they can have an abortion. I'm sure she means well. But I don't know how she figures she's promoting safety. Does she have proof? Can she show us the numbers?

POINT: Parental Consent for Underage Abortions Is a Natural

Coming on the heels of a proposal filed for a heartbeat abortion bill, another abortion bill is being floated in the state Capitol. This one involves underage females who are seeking to obtain an abortion. The bill would stipulate that the parent(s) of a minor seeking to terminate a pregnancy would need to consent to the procedure.

Heeding the pleas of parents whose children were slaughtered in the state’s worst school shooting, the Florida Senate delivered a major victory Wednesday to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis by removing embattled Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel from office.

DeSantis, as a candidate for governor last year, pledged to oust the Democratic sheriff for failures associated with the February 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 14 students and three staff members dead and another 17 people injured.

James Dailey Granted Temporary Stay of Execution

A federal judge Wednesday granted a temporary stay of execution to 73-year-old James Dailey, convicted in Florida of stabbing and drowning a 14-year-old girl in 1985.

Looking at a tough race next year, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., looked to showcase his record on Medicare this week, even as Democrats took aim at his vote on a prescription drugs bill. 

On Wednesday, Buchanan, a member of the powerful U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, highlighted his support for three bills expanding Medicare. From his seat on the committee, Buchanan threw his seat behind legislation expanding Medicare coverage to include hearing aids, dental care and vision services.
