Florida's Waltz Co-Sponsors Puerto Rico Statehood Bill

U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla. has co-sponsored a bill to make Puerto Rico the 51st state.

H.R. 4901, the Puerto Rico Statehood Admission Act, would require a "Statehood Yes-No" vote by both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate for the island. This is the same precedent established for the admission process of Alaska and Hawaii.

The legislation is sponsored by U.S. Reps. Jenniffer González Colón, R-P.R., and Jose Serrano, D-N.Y.

“The people of Puerto Rico have already twice requested to become a state,” said Waltz on Tuesday. “It is time for the citizens of Puerto Rico to be able to have the same rights and privileges as American citizens and I hope my colleagues will support this measure.”

Since 1917, more than 200,000 American citizens from Puerto Rico have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, serving in every conflict since World War I. More than 10,000 active duty military personnel from Puerto Rico currently serve across the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Florida native Waltz, whose 6th congressional district includes Flagler and Volusia counties as well as portions of Lake and St. Johns counties, is a combat-decorated Green Beret.

“This historic bill places us on a path towards the political equality that our people deserve,” said González Colón. “The American citizens of Puerto Rico will have the opportunity to participate in a federally-sponsored vote and be asked the following question: ‘Should Puerto Rico be admitted as a State of the Union, yes or no?’. This is similar to what happened in Alaska and Hawaii, which is what ultimately makes this legislation different.”

Puerto Rico not only served in the USA armed forces but pays billions in Federal taxes to the USA annually. It is time for the island to become a state. Puerto Ricans are required to pay US federal taxes, although most residents do not have to pay the federal personal income tax.[10] In 2016, Puerto Rico paid $3.6 billion into the US Treasury.[11] Residents of Puerto Rico pay into Social Security, and are thus eligible for Social Security benefits upon retirement. The recent economic crisis on the island has put a huge dent in the federal tax revenue collected from Puerto Rico, but it still added up to $3.6 billion in fiscal year 2016. That's not much less than some states where residents do pay full  income tax: Vermont and Wyoming paid $4.5 billion in federal taxes that year._ Some people in Puerto Rico don’t pay federal income taxes, but they do pay Social Security, Medicare, import, export and commodity taxes. Their federal tax bills add up to more than $3 billion a year.

Thank you Congressman Waltz for supporting 3.2 Million US citizens living in Puerto Rico who have fought in every one of our wars since 1917 to defend the freedoms others take for granted (like some making comments here).they have paid their dues and keeping them as a colony of the US has totally screwed them. if they want statehood we should absolutely give it to them.www.works77.com

Thank you, Congressman Waltz, for supporting equality through statehood for the 3.2 million U.S. citizens living in Puerto Rico. Like all the territories that became states before them, Puerto Rico will prosper as a state and enrich the U.S. as a whole. Admitting Puerto Rico as our 51st state is the right thing to do.
