This past week, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., the dean of the Florida delegation, announced he plans to run for another term in 2020 despite his fight with pancreatic cancer.

“I am truly honored to represent Florida's 20th Congressional District in the United States Congress,” Hastings noted this week. “Serving my constituents and our nation is an absolute privilege. As a country, we face many challenges with the current polices of the Trump administration, which is why I am not backing down and ready for the fight ahead in 2020. I would be humbled for your support. I hope that we can stand together and make our voices heard!”

After being convicted and impeachment by Congress for accepting a bribe–becoming only the sixth federal judge in American history to be removed from the bench by Congress–Hastings rebounded to win a congressional seat in 1992. Since then, Hastings has easily defended his seat in a secure Democratic district even as the U.S.Treasury Department paid out $220,000 to settle with a former staffer who accused the congressman of sexual harassment. Hastings has been ranked by Judicial Watch as the number one member of Congress when it came to nepotism.

Hastings is one of the co-chairs of the Florida delegation and when Democrats took over the U.S. House at the start of the year, he became the vice-chairman of the powerful U.S. House Rules Committee. Also in January, Hastings announced he was battling pancreatic cancer.

Representing parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties, Hastings is in a very secure district for Democrats. Hillary Clinton took 70 percent of the vote here in 2016. As of the last election cycle, a solid majority--63 percent--of the district are registered Democrats while only 13 percent are Republicans.

Despite that, a few candidates are already running against Hastings. Despite losing a bid for Congress in 2014 and a state Senate contest in 2016, Emmanuel Morel is challenging Hastings in the primary. So is radio host James Taylor. On the Republican side, Lateresa Jones is running against Greg Musselwhite.

Give somebody else a chance, Alcee! You already had your first go-around AND your second-chance. Retire gracefully and pass your seat on to a younger and very-well-qualified, progressive, and well-intentioned Dem.

Alcee Hastings is the "Bill Cosby of politics"... Florida would do well to be FINALLY RID of him ! "WHADDAYA SAY 'ME-TOO' GALS ???...(or are you still "sitting on your hands")?

Poster boy for term limits.
