Rick Scott, Mike Braun Champion Congressional Term Limits, Presidential Line Item Veto

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., teamed up with U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., to propose major changes to the federal political system including a line item veto for the president, term limits in Congress and requiring a super-majority in Congress to raise taxes.

Scott and Braun showcased their “Make Washington Work” plan on Tuesday. Besides the amendments, Scott and Braun unveiled a bill to end automatic congressional pay raises.

As he explained why he was championing these proposals, including supporting amending the U.S. Constitution, Scott pointed to his career in the private sector and contrasted with his short tenure on Capitol Hill.

“I spent my entire career in business. I often bought failing companies and turned them around. The U.S. government is like a failing business right now. We need change,” Scott said.

“I’ve been a member of the United States Senate for four months, and it’s as dysfunctional as you think it is – government needs to be completely reinvented,” Scott added. “If you were going to create a federal government system today, it sure wouldn’t be what we have now. The people of Florida deserve a government that works. Period. My Make Washington Work plan proposes real reforms, including some that I successfully pushed for as governor. It requires a supermajority to raise taxes or fees, establishes term limits for members of Congress and institutes a line-item veto. It would also eliminate automatic pay raises for members of Congress.

“That career politicians’ gravy train needs to come to an end. It’s clear that now more than ever it will be an uphill climb, but I’m committed to fighting for the people of Florida. I won’t back down,” Scott said in conclusion.

“I knew Washington was dysfunctional, gummed up and not moving, but it’s worse than I ever thought. The Make Washington Work plan is a solution that will help unclog the dysfunction in Washington by creating term limits and eliminating automatic pay raises for members of Congress,” Braun said.

Scott and Braun called for amendments so that “two-thirds approval of each house of Congress would be required to impose or raise any tax or fee" and “no member of Congress would be permitted to serve longer than 12 years in either house of Congress (six terms in the House of Representatives, and two terms in the Senate).”

So glad we no longer have traitor Obozo in our White House, but it's even better that Adolph Rodham Hitlary was told where to go by our voters.

Unlike the douche in chief you have now right. Giving great tax cuts to billionaires and having them give it back for his campaign. Yep that gravey train is really stopping. I can’t decide if you guys are just dumb or blind.

When are you going to address the violations to the Constitution by the DRAFT DODGER, TRUMP?

When Joe Biden admits he got 5 deferments from Vietnam and a medical deferment for Ashma. Just like Trump.

At least Scott and Braun are attempting to clean up Congress. I wish them good luck and will support then in any way I can. However they are waging a very steep up hill battle that seems almost impossible to overcome. There are way too many weasels sitting in those seats. This is the result of stolen elections, ballot harvesting and other illegal activities. Photo ID must be required and verified for every election!!

John Post - You have encapsulated what NEEDS ro happen in D.C. I'm in absolute agreement with you --- I'd like to add (as a true 'recovery' to REAL America) that I would like to see far fewer Lawyers seated in our Capitol. I am leaning to honest high-quality Business people moving into positions of power.

Stuff it, Scott!

No, "stuff it" is what the voters told Bill Nelson! :-)

Term Limits, line item veto NO!

I admire Sen. Scott's energy and focus. But limiting taxes like this will do nothing if there is not a similar limit on incurring new debt. Our current legislators have discovered that it is easier to borrow money than to ask for new taxes.

The U.S. Federal deficit was $587 billion in Obama’s last year and it grew to $666 billion in Trump’s first year of his presidency. The U.S. Treasury Department states the U.S. Federal Deficit will increase to more than $1 trillion in fiscal 2020. And this is before the additional deficits created by the just passed two year budget. https://www.forbes.com/sites/chuckjones/2018/02/09/trumps-federal-budget-deficit-1-trillion-and-beyond/#177bf20f544f And the money the USA borrows comes from China and Japan. China’s holdings of notes, bills and bonds increased $4.2 billion to $1.13 trillion in February from the previous month, according to Treasury Department data released Monday in Washington. Japan remained the second-biggest holder, with $1.07 trillion, up $2.2 billion from January. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-15/china-s-holdings-of-u-s-treasuries-increase-for-a-third-month

We would all like to see congressional term limits, but the Chuck Schumers and Nancy Pelosis of this world will see this as a limit on their power grabs.

Don Young Republican of Alaska has been in the Congress for over 46 years the longest of any current person in the House or Senate Chuck Grassley Republican has been in the Congress for over 44 years the second longest of any current person in the House or Senate Article One Section 8 of the United State Constitution specifically state that Congress not the President has: the power to lay and collect taxes and tariffs for the general welfare of the United States, the power to borrow money, the power to regulate interstate and international commerce, the power to set naturalization laws, the power to coin and regulate money, the power to establish federal courts inferior to the Supreme Court, the power to raise and support military forces, and the power to declare war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_One_of_the_United_States_Constitution

And Nancy Pelosi has been in office 32 years while John Dingell served for 59 years before retiring this year, followed by Robert Byrd with 57 years and Carl Hayden with 56 years. All Democrats. Current longest serving Democrat is Patrick Leahy with 44 years. The top ten longest serving members of both the House and Senate were Democrats. So what exactly is your point Pat Morgan with you trying to single out Republicans? Oh and let’s not forget of Chuckles Schumer who has been in office for 38 years.

Term limits are greater needed. But they should be the same as the President of the United States. No longer. To many congress people have become millionaires while working for the taxpayers. They have no interest in what, “We the People “, want. They do their own thing regardless how it affects the Americans. Also, as we are seeing now, power, money and greed has taken over our congress. They have not done any work since President Trump was elected. I don’t care if you like him or not, you are working for the taxpayers, and should be concerned about the open borders, that’s allowing criminals and sick people into our country . Leaving the American citizens at risk. Also, all the anti Semitic remarks made by congress should be addressed. These remarks are disrespectful to our ally . A formal apology should be made on behalf of the United States. This is not who we are. We are people with dignity and respect, and we should treat others the same.

No other US ally has attacked a US ship...but on the bright side at least Israel did not use the planes the US gave them. The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War.[2] The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[3] At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident

You seem to have (accidentally) skipped some stuff: "Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.[5] Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident
