DeSantis Executive Order: Commitment to Eliminating Common Core and More

February 1, 2019 - 10:45am

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 19-32 Friday, outlining a path for Florida to improve its education system by eliminating Common Core and paving the way for Florida students to receive a world-class education to prepare them for jobs of the future.

“I have heard parents from across the state loud and clear and they all agree that it is time to finally end Common Core,” said DeSantis, speaking from Cape Coral. “So today, we are taking action through this executive order to ensure that Florida has the best academic standards in the nation and eliminating Common Core from our schools, as well as reaffirming my commitment to prepare our students for the real world through an increased focus on civic education.”

Executive Order 19-32 directs Florida Department of Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran to comprehensively review the academic standards for Florida’s Kindergarten through grade 12 students and provide recommended revisions to Gov. DeSantis. The recommendations shall:

  • Articulate how Florida will eliminate Common Core (Florida Standards) and ensure we return to the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic;
  • Provide a roadmap to make Florida’s standards No. 1 in the nation;
  • Reflect Florida Department of Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran’s consultation with relevant stakeholders to include parents and teachers;
  • Deem how to increase the quality of instructional curriculum;
  • Suggest innovative ways to streamline testing;
  • Identify opportunities to equip high school graduates with sufficient knowledge of America’s civics, particularly the principles reflected in the Unites States Constitution, so as to be capable of discharging the responsibilities associated with American citizenship; and
  • Outline a pathway for Florida to be the most literate state in the nation.

Our new Governor is doing an amazing job right out of the gate. He is setting a very fast pace for himself and those around him. Like Trump, his team will have to up their game if they are going to keep up with him. I'm so excited about what DeSantis can actually do to improve the functioning of Florida. We have some good people in government. We just have to expect, actually demand, more from them if they want to keep their jobs. I think that is what DeSantis wants government officials to know as well. No more will "asleep at the switch" be acceptable.

He does seem to be hitting the ground running, and fortunately he is nothing like Trump. Morals, yes; Veteran, yes; one wife, yes; kids with same one wife, yes; common sense, yes; Trump? none of the above...

Drop the acronyms. What the hell is ASVAB?

the fact that you don't know what that stands for is fairly concerning. Were you educated abroad?

Me: Hey Google, what is ASVAB? Google: Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Me: Ok.

On the surface, this doesn't seem like a bad idea, but I'll wait to see what the replacement is. STEM is not the answer for every kid. It's a recipe for failure. It should be based on what kids like and what they are good at, sort of like the military with the ASVAB. Perhaps you could develop an ASVAB for education to determine what kids are good at and what they like, and they could pursue an educational path and the legislature could provide funding to support that, some vocational, some educational. Now that would be ground breaking education, and that would really be preparing kids for future careers...

Actually, this version of the ASVAB exists and is a really excellent career tool that has no affiliation with the normal ASVAB or military recruitment so should be palatable for all schools and parents.

Since common core is just a database of things to know, what is the problem with it?...………..The real problem is all the testing, other mandates repubs are saddling public schools with...…………...And what's with paying big corporations $58mm to do testing?...……... Shouldn't the teachers be doing that?...…And no more than quarterly, final regular exams, not 3x as much……..And Charters should be required to pass the same ones to see if they are doing their job...…………....As far as I can tell the whole thing is a scam to kill off public schools so private corporations can take over with NO accountability...……..Remember JEB! tried privation and he had to go back to public workers as private ended up costing more, paying workers less for worse outcomes...……..But at least JEB! measured it and saw it wasn't working and changed back...…….Of course public schools don't give big money to pols and the private schools have bought them off.

"a database of things to know".... How about "reading", "writing", and "arithmetic" for "starters"??? FLORIDA'S Teachers, Administrators, School Board Members, and Boards of Education, have been strangely lax when it comes to educating our kids.... (yes, there have been "exceptions": BUT, "across the board", the "results" disappointedly DISMAL for decades..!)

based on what? because you said so tiny? reading, writing and arithmetic? These have been staples for hundreds of years dumbo. Your NY education is showing through. Perhaps you could haul *** back there and get a job biggin'...

Those are in it obviously...………….While public schools can be much better and getting better, private state funded ones were not better either and not improving, some little more than frauds with no accountability...…………..Yet no mention of that says loads about you...…………..I don't mind Charters, etc but if public money goes there, accountability does too...……..With tech now I'd like to see K-12 grade neighborhood schools where the kids do a lot of the work, teaching, etc as part of their education...………… They should be open 16-24hr/day so parents can work when they are in school...……..Since neighborhood no busing needed saving that and specialist teachers travel so everyone has the same choices...…………...The kids can even build the schools as vocational training using solar to lower running costs learning that too...…………..They would learn cooking for people in the cafeteria, care for the building, keep it clean, etc. …………….For the work they can get college credits, take uni classes for those advanced enough and finish with multiple jobs skills and 2-3 yrs of uni for the advanced ones, etc …………..And having a database to measure from is valuable to know what is working...…Another big thing is many of them will grow up together with the same teachers so they have to behave as everyone knows them and can help them...……...Since this cuts building, fewer teachers but 3x the teaching …………. Busing and that time, money, fuel, manpower wasted is gone and serve working families far better is a solution to what we have now...……….Can we agree on that?

Fine. But, Richard Corcoran certainly cannot be allowed to be in charge of the effort. He has no training nor expertise in ANY area of education, curriculum development, testing, administration, etc. The 67 counties' school superintendents should be the prime movers and shakers. Corcoran is even more clueless in this area of endeavor than is Blundering Betsy DeVos. (DeVos' answer to the problem is simply privatizing school systems and letting big business run them.)

Not to worry "VBlue"; they'll both have "experts" to "guide them and bring them to speed"... BUT a perpetual "Nabob of Negativism" (such as yourself) certainly won't be asked for ANY advise..!

you either fat boy, you can't even spell...

Have you listened to Corcoran? …………..He wants to privatize the whole thing and past experience has shown that does not turn out well with worse results, less worker pay thus more foodstamps and costs more. …………….Do you want to pay for that?...………..Last yr they gave ALL the capital, repair money to Charters leaving publics schools that couldn't keep the buildings working as no money for repairs...………..What happened id Florida paid to build charter school buildings that in just a couple yrs dissolve the Charter and keep the building scam...………...Same scam as the let's build a church scam after built the pastor runs the flock off and selling the building.

Keep up the good work governor.

That's great news as an ex-algebra teacher I know that shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Common core was definitely not that straight line. Another issuse I wrote to you was about a state level tax credit or refund on solar systems. South Carolina offers 25% while the Federal tax credit is 30%. Could you please promote solar panels in the Sun Shine state by offering 20%?

FPL and the Florida legislature (an FPL lapdog) have been blocking effective solar development in this state for the last 20+ years.

Not just solar but any competition as it is still illegal to sell electricity in Florida unless you are a or to a utility except recently they made an exception for EVs...………….But there is a new amendment coming in 2020 to open Florida grid to a free market letting anyone buy, sell power...…………..In Texas where they have it wind, solar, clean utilities are kicking FF utility but on price and taking market share..
