DeSantis Law and Order Message Clear Winner in Florida Debate

October 23, 2018 - 6:00am

Sunday night’s debate between Republican candidate for governor of Florida Congressman Ron DeSantis and his Far-Left Democratic opponent Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum had plenty of fireworks, and in our view one clear winner: Ron DeSantis.

While Gillum went through the usual litany of "free stuff from the government" and charges of racism that Democrats have been running on for years, DeSantis nationalized his message and homed-in on the issues on every television and computer screen in America: law and order and illegal immigration.

“Andrew is a failed mayor. He’s presided over a crime-ridden city. He’s involved in corruption. He’s not the guy to lead our state,” DeSantis said in this opening statement, and despite efforts to get him off message, he kept hitting that theme.

One of the high points of the debate for DeSantis was when he asked Gillum if he would cooperate with law enforcement on immigration. The short answer was NO.

You can see the exchange through this link to Twitter.

Gillum’s well-known anti-police views prompted Jeff Bell, president of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Association, to go on Fox News prior to the debate to lambaste Gillum. “From a law enforcement perspective, when you have a potential candidate for the next governor whose willing to sign a pledge with an anti-law enforcement, anti-government radical group such as the Dream Defenders,” Bell said, “he’s clearly sending a message to the voters before Election Day that he’s willing to support, defend and recognize radical groups like the Dream Defenders and he supports radicalization over the rule of law.”

DeSantis cast Gillum as soft on crime, bad for the economy and keen on higher taxes. He also hammered him over a continuing FBI investigation into possible corruption at Tallahassee City Hall.

At one point asking him, “Did you pay for the Hamilton ticket, or did the undercover FBI agent?”

While CNN’s liberal “moderator” Jake Tapper did his best to push the debate towards ground favorable to Gillum, DeSantis did a solid job sticking to his themes.

DeSantis also did a good job of sticking Gillum’s with his support from the Far-Left and their plans to impeach President Trump.

“He [Gillum] wants to impeach Trump, he’s always saying bad things about him ... I think I will be better positioned to advance Florida’s priorities because I have a productive relationship with the administration,” said DeSantis.

And of course Congressman DeSantis is right, billionaire leftwing political activist Tom Steyer has already made a big investment in the 2018 election, but in the closing days of the campaign, Steyer has picked his favorite candidate and is pulling out all the stops.

Steyer is personally donating $2 million to Andrew Gillum's "Forward Florida" political action committee, which is aligned with the Gillum campaign. Through his organization, "Need to Impeach," he is directing a massive direct mail pitch to 300,000 Florida voters who have signed up to support his effort to impeach President Donald Trump. The mail piece makes specific reference to Gillum's support of impeachment.

Another organization funded by Steyer, NextGen America, has already spent more than $5 million on efforts to get Gillum elected.

The consensus among conservatives was that DeSantis won the debate, with Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams saying, “Ron DeSantis’ debate performance was what I expected from a decorated military veteran, former prosecutor and proven leader. He was direct, thoughtful and strong. However, it is Ron’s support for law enforcement that I think will resonate with Florida families and it’s why he won tonight’s debate. Andrew Gillum hasn’t supported law enforcement, he signed an anti-police pledge, and he didn’t do anything tonight to calm the nerves of people rightfully concerned about public safety under his failed leadership.”

Even President Trump leaned in tweeting this:

"Ron @RonDeSantisFL DeSantis had a great debate victory tonight against Andrew Gillum, a mayor who presides over one of the worst run, and most corrupt, cities in Florida. Ron will build on the great job done by Governor Rick Scott. Gillum will make Florida the next Venezuela!"

However, we think our Twitter friend Amy Mek @AmyMek summed it up best when she tweeted:

"ALERT FLORIDA!

"Gubernatorial candidate, Soros & CAIR-backed Andrew Gillum is a threat to National Security.

"Gillum is supported by Communist Donors, Militant Socialists, Muslim Brotherhood & PLO terrorists trying incite a revolution in America & destroy Trump."

We urge all our CHQ readers and friends to pull out all the stops and to get behind Ron DeSantis with everything you’ve got. Amy Mek is right, this isn’t just about Florida, it is about turning back the Far-Left revolution funded by Soros and Steyer.

Gee . . . . now Nancy and SSN are empowering slimy, racist, over-the-top dialogue . . . . why have they stooped so low to support associating a candidate for governor with terrorists and the like . . . . . . . SSN must be really proud of carrying this article . . . . . . I mean, it's not like allowing hate speech like this can end up in someone planting a mailbox bomb (today), now is it . . . . . . . . . what is SSN going to accommodate next week --> Stormfront article that goes after blacks and jews . . . . . . . PATHETIC

I believe Gillum clearly 'won' the debate, made a much better overall impression, and will win the election. DeSantis came across as a confrontational, rightwing, zealot who, as governor, will do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for YOU ... unless you're a member of his tribe, his cult, his inner circle. DeSantis will be the governor "for The Party"; Gillum will be the governor "for The People"! The choice is clear.

LOL >>Gillum clearly was better candidate..DeSantis looked and sounded like nixon..Gillum will be the next Governor..

Red Tide has nothing to do with deregulation. It has been occurring for 100s of years.

Absolutely not true. Red tide is natural, but feeds on nitrates and other pollution related nutrients. It is occurring with greater intensity due to polluted waters which are a result of a lack of environmental protections and related regulations.

not to this level, just check the report provided by the experts at Mote Marine, clearly says outbreak is at unprecedented levels... The party rhetoric just doesn't measure up to the facts...

this is hardly a partisan review...too funny. I thought Gillum actually did better, but I was surprised at how weel DeSantis did as well. His legal training clearly showed through...

What debate did you watch. I saw a do nothing wimpering Trump stooge. A G was precise and in control start to finish

Current polls say over 50% of the State disagrees with you. Oh well......

I can't believe more folks cannot see through the props and window dressing to see what Gillum is all about. Forget his radical agenda to transform this state's fertile business climate into one more like New York burdened with regulation and high taxes. It's hard to improve upon being in the Top 10 nationwide. What plan does Gillum to lift Florida into a Top 3 state? Oh , I get it, open our arms and wallets to the 'caravan' illegals and provide taxpayer funded largess that will divert dollars that benefit our citizenry. Such an approach has California teetering on bankruptcy and the days of giving out IOUs because they don't have money in the till. We can't afford being the welfare mecca for the world. Even Margaret Tatcher quipped, the only problem with socialism is at some point you run out of other people's (taxpayers) money.

What you fail to see if that people see through and frankly are sick and tired of your sky is falling rhetoric. It is disingenuous and not helpful. In order for us to turn into NY or Cali, the entire legislature would have to turn Dem and stay that way for many, many terms. Business will be fine. They always are. They don't need continued Gov't handouts to make more money. They do fine without that. We need good schools, good infrastructure, clean water. You also fail to realize that Rep deregulation is responsible for the red tide fiasco we are currently in. They cut SWFLMD and the state's EPA budgets in half, deregulated septic tanks, cut all state waterway testing, and deregulated runoff detection. How's all that working for you? Your Socilism comment is laughable, especially in reference to Margaret Thatcher, primarily because you don't even know what Socialism means. If you did, you would not use it in this context. It is just another Rep. scare tactic. 9 of the top 10 world economies all have socialized, gov't run health insurance. They are clearly not Socialists, but very well established democracies. Great Briatin is one of those (Thatcher). The outlier, the US. Why? One word, MONEY. The US spends 17 times more on health care than the next highest nation, yet were are only 23 in healthcare quality and effectiveness in the world. These nations literally saved billions and billions of dollars by socializing their healthcare at negotiated and managed rates. Why? You cut out greedy insurance companies, greedy medical groups, greedy pharmaceutical companies, etc. You clearly don't cut out quality, because the top 10 are all gov't run. What Gillum will bring this state is what we all need, some balance. Our system simply does not work well at all with all one sided rule. It is designed to be a balanced system, not too far right, nor too far left, which is why Gillum and his agenda for people, rather than DeSantis' special interests agenda, makes more sense. He will not be successful with everything, but Gov't of the people, by the people, and for the people is clearly better than Gov't for hire and business. And now you have the rest of the story...

Well reasoned response.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! 100% right on! #Go Gillum! #VoteBlue!

Hear, hear!
