Bill Nelson, Rick Scott Running Close in New Poll

September 14, 2018 - 9:15am

A new poll shows a tight race between U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and Gov. Rick Scott in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the nation.

Rasmussen Reports released a poll on Thursday which shows Nelson at 45 percent and Scott right behind him at 44 percent while 5 percent opt for other candidates and 6 percent are not sure.

There is a slight gender gap with Scott ahead with men 48 percent to 44 percent while Nelson leads with women 45 percent to 40 percent. Nelson leads with seniors and voters under 40 but Scott is ahead with voters between 40 and 64. Scott leads with whites 47 percent to 43 percent and with Hispanics 47 percent to 41 percent while blacks go for Nelson 67 percent to 28 percent.

Both candidates have nailed down their party base with Democrats going 77 percent to 14 percent for Nelson while Scott takes Republicans 82 percent to 13 percent. Nelson gets almost half of voters outside the major parties--49 percent--while 31 percent of them are for Scott while 12 percent are on the fence and 8 percent are undecided.

Scott is seen as favorable by 49 percent of those surveyed while 45 percent view him unfavorably.

Nelson is also above water with 48 percent seeing him as favorable and 42 percent see him as unfavorable.

President Donald Trump, who carried in Florida in 2016, is seen as favorable by half of those surveyed--50 percent--while the other half--also 50 percent--disapprove of him. Asked if the upcoming elections are a referendum on Trump, 47 percent said yes and 43 percent said no.

Asked about the most important issue of the election, 23 percent say the economy, 15 percent say government ethics and corruption, 13 percent say taxes, another 13 percent say illegal immigration, 8 percent say social issues, another 8 percent say the environment, 6 percent say education and another 6 percent say school safety.

The poll of 800 likely voters in Florida--35 percent of them Republicans, 34 percent of them outside of the major parties and 31 percent of them Democrats--was taken from Sept. 10-Sept. 11 and had a margin of error of +/- 3.5 percent.

Bill Nelson has done well for Florida, while Scott has gotten richer & richer. I have seen the light, hopefully many other Real Republicans will, as well.

IF NELSON GETS IN THERE WILL BE ANOTHER COMMUNIST, THAT BELIEVES IN OPEN BORDERS, AND JUST BRING ANYONE IN HERE EVEN WITH DISEASE TO MAKE FLORIDA A DISEASE RIDDEN LAND MASS. IS ANY FLORIDIAN THAT STUPID TO EVEN TAKE THIS CHANCE??? THERE ARE SEVERAL IDENTIFICATIONS THAT GO ALONG WITH COMMUNISM, ONE IS SOCIALISM, AND THE MOST RECENT IN ARRIVAL IS DEMOCRAT, ANYTIME YOU SEE A DEMOCRAT YOU CAN BE SURE IT IS A COMMUNIST. OTHERS MAY WARRANT INVESTIGATION, BUT A DEMOCRAT DOES NOT, YOU CAN BE SURE THEY ARE COMMUNISTS.

you need to go live with Trump you sound just like him

You so funny round eyes. You so full of hate, you so full of it. You obviously smoking the good chit. You'd rather have polluting, looting Scott go to DC? I know it is tempting to PROMOTE HIM OUTTA HERE, but he could do further damage to Florida by long distance. Scott's love of big sugar is damaging Florida's tourist industry. Sugar is sweet but tourism is our bread and butter. You real dumb round eyes!

Another racist hiding behind patriotism or the flag if you're in line with Trump he's the clown and you're the circus

YOU ARE VERY STUPID WHO APPARENTLY DON'T KNOW THE MEANING/ DIFFERENCE OF SOCIALISM AND COMMUNISM. YOU DO KNOW THAT BILL NELSON HAS BEEN IN THE SENATE FOR A PRETTY LONG TIME NOW AND HAS FLORIDA BEEN A SOCIALIST STATE? HAS THE STATE OF FLORIDA BEEN A COMMUNIST STATE? OR BETTER YET LIKE DESANTIS HAS PUT IT FLORIDA WILL BECOME LIKE VENEZUELA; HAS IT? WHAT IS THE MEANING OF SOCIALIST? THE NARROWEST DEFINITION OF SOCIALISM INVOLVES STATE OWNING ALL BUSINESSES, WITH A BAN OF PRIVATE ECONOMIC ACTIVITY ABOVE SOME LEVEL. I SUGGEST YOU OPEN YOUR MIND AND DO SOME RESEARCH AND BEFORE YOU POST FAKE IDEOLOGY.

Apparently, YOU don't know the difference, either. Socialism began in America around 1913, with Income Tax and Social Security. The Feds have been adding more and more as time has progressed. Teddy Roosevelt added a "Chicken to every pot... (Where is that in the constitution?), greatly furthering the 'movement. Calling "Health Care" a RIGHT of people is Communism (which means PURE control by the (Fed) Government. America is already fairly "Socialist", but the Democrat and Republican "SWITCHED" sides with Lyndon Johnson. He signed bills in '94 and '95 that prove it. Kennedy was a DEMOCRAT who did not favor blacks and voting rights. THAT wa the BIG SWITCH!

Good luck Mr. Nelson. You're older than dirt and have neither scandal nor fabulous wealth to show for it.

Scott sure did get rich as governor. His declared worth went up $60 million, I wonder how much he really stole from Florida

Scott is a very successful smart and has done a great job as governor. As Senator he will help to keep Florida & America Great!

Hopefully, Nelson wins ... but even if Scott wins ... as a senator, he won't be able to do the kind of direct damage to this state that he's done as governor. He won't be able to do any good, either, but his negative effects on this state will be minimized. He's clearly been the worst governor here in my lifetime!

I see gun control isn't even mentioned in the top issues. Amazing when you think of the millions of dollars of free publicity these gun grabber groups receive from every media outlet in the state. In addition the issue that received the most votes, the economy, doesn't portend very well for a candidate that wants to raise taxes and is an admitted socialist.

If that is true then Scott, repubs are in big trouble as the undercounted vote is on the dem side...…………..And Scott is spending 5-1 vs Nelson yet still losing!!.....……………...Fact is that repubs are fiscally and morally bankrupt has set in............November is going to be very interesting showing just how little support repubs have....................And every time Trump opens his mouth, writes a tweet, it just gets worse.........

Goverment corruption starting with Trump, Scott and right down to our Congressman Gaetz. They don’t listen to their constituents they listen to big money,

Absolutely!

I don’t know what state you two are living in but it is not Florida! Ranked number 1 on the Cato Institute’s economic freedom ratings by states, jobless rate very low, and even a budgetary surplus. Perhaps Illinois or New York is run better to your liking.

Hey so fine in florida, have you heard about racing to the bottom? It’s what China and Florida have both been doing, pushed by corrupt kleptocrats, destroying their natural resources and futures...States like New York and Illinois are in for the long haul, not temporary gains. Call it commonsense or call it concern for their grandchildren.

Thanks Dimitry or Mikhail or whatever your actual Russian name is. Even among conservative Americans, the Cato Institute gets no traction. It’s telling that 1.) You take Cato I. as a source, indicating your newsfeed is different from that of most Americans, and 2.) you’re so unaware of how different that is.

nelson will win due to the momentum of Gillum..and the day after day disaster in the WH.

Odd that Rasmussen's poll strongly overweighs NPA (independent) voters whose turnout typically is anemic. Only about a quarter of Florida voters are NPA. Also Dem/Pub percentages should have been flipped to reflect more accurately current party affiliations.
