Florida gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., resigned his seat in Congress on Monday to focus on his campaign.

DeSantis sent a letter to U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., resigning the seat he first won in 2012.

"As the Republican nominee for governor of Florida, it is clear to me that I will likely miss the vast majority of our remaining session days for this Congress. Under these circumstances, it would be inappropriate for me to accept a salary," DeSantis wrote.

DeSantis insisted he would not be able to focus on his congressional duties and resigned the seat effective as of September 1. As such, he will not be paid his congressional salary for September.

Looking back at his six years in the House, DeSantis pointed with pride to his efforts to move the U.S. embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, lowering taxes and his work on behalf of veterans.

With the support of President Donald Trump, DeSantis routed Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam in the Republican primary last month. He will face Democratic candidate Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum in November.

DeSantis claimed an open congressional seat in 2012, representing parts of the First Coast and Northeast Florida. Redistricting moved DeSantis slightly to the south though he continues to represent the Atlantic coast from the southern parts of St. Johns County down to Volusia County.

In 2014, DeSantis easily won a second term and started running for the U.S. Senate held by U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. However when Rubio announced at the last moment that he would run for a second term in the Senate, DeSantis switched back to defend his House seat and won a third term.

Polls show a close contest between DeSantis and Gillum. Republican Michael Waltz and Democrat Nancy Soderberg are running for the seat DeSantis held.

FLORIDA DEFINITELY NEEDS DeSANTIS. ONE THING FLORIDA DOES NOT NEED IS A COMMUNIST GILLUM, AND THAT WOULD BE A DEFINITE ROAD PAVED TO HELL FOR FLORIDA. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS WOULD WANT GILLUM WITH OPEN BORDERS, JUST COME RIGHT ON IN AND BRING ANY DISEASE YOU HAVE WITH YOU. FLORIDA WOULD DEFINITELY BECOME A DISEASE RIDDEN STATE FOR SURE, AMONG OTHER EVENTS TO FOLLOW. ALSO FLORIDA TAKE AN EXTREMELY SOLID LOOK AT DeSANTIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS, DEDICATION, AND EDUCATION, HE IS FAR SUPERIOR THAN GILLUM.

I'm wishing you all the best, Ron! Spread the good word around the State. I'm happy you decided to run for Governor. I hope whoever is running to take your place is of your caliber and a strong supporter of the Trump Agenda.

wish that empty suit racist would do us all a favor and quit the Gov.'s race...

Gillum made a complete mess of Tallahassee! Just think what he will do to Florida! Also, Gillum wants to give Florida to Illegals, make it a Sanctuary State, etc. Google him to research for yourself!

Quite a few of our local high schoolers have headed to FSU and seem to love Tallahassee. It is physically impossible to give Florida away, we are stuck with it. Why not work together to make it a better place instead of spreading "fake news." PS You forgot to call him a socialist.

Thank you for your positive post.

Give it up "OJoe"; We are making it a better place,... Say "hello" to your new Governor DeSantis ! (Are you going to tell me now that I forgot to call Gillum a socialist too ?!?) If the rest of Gillum's constituency is anything like you and "jerry", Gillum is already a 'loser', and I guess that makes all of the opposition "racists" (according to you, I suppose....)

like you would know tiny, the closet, unemployed, gov't *** racist...

No what makes a racist is a racist. Let’s just state the fact and not forget the DeSantis was a guest speaker for 4 years in a row at a conference organized by a hard-right conservative who has been labeled as a “driving force of the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and anti-black movements” by the Southern Poverty Law Center. No matter how hard you try to paint a zebra look like a horse it’s still a zebra.

Thank you for your calmness and lack of name calling.

Good! And when he loses to Gillum, we'll finally be rid of him!

In your dreams!
