Rubio: I Will Oppose Kendall Parkway Until Everglades Protection Is Guaranteed

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio announced Tuesday on NBC 6 Miami his objections to the planned Kendall Parkway expressway in light of the upcoming project review. The senator released the following statement on the proposed roadway project:

“One of the reasons why I decided to run for re-election in 2016 was to continue the momentum of recent years on Everglades Restoration," he said.

"As a lifelong resident of Miami-Dade County, I know the residents of West Kendall need a solution to their traffic woes. But a solution to this problem cannot come at the expense of Everglades restoration. Therefore, I intend to ask all relevant federal agencies to oppose the proposed roadway project until it is aligned as far east as feasible and includes provisions that will guarantee an effective and enduring ‘West Kendall Everglades Buffer’ that prevents rather than encourages additional development in the project area.”

I'd rather sit in bumper to bumper traffic to and from work every day, so that the mud and alligators don't get disturbed..........said no Kendall resident, EVER. And by the way, the proposed highway will run East of Krome, so there is already plenty of construction, further west than the proposed highway. We need traffic relief and we need it ASAP. The work on the Turnpike, and the new extension to the 874 at SW 128th street are an excellent start to getting cars on to the highway and out of the Kendall arteries. But more needs to be done. I'll vote 20 times for this Kendall Parkway if I can.

Societies never tend to favor environment over convenience, hence the problem. If the Miami area really needs traffic relief, invest in mass transit like other big cities. More roads only solves the problem for a decade.

I don't understand how state of Florida would allow any commercial development anywhere hear the Everglades. I'm an Independent Party voter who will probably vote for Graham but I definitely do not agree with her on this. Not any of the Dems running for Governor has given an opinion regarding the Everglades. What a shame !

The proposed highway will run east of Krome Ave, so if you are worried about the Everglades, then you are about 36 years too late.

I can promise you as someone who has lived on and off in Dade County for 20 years, people in Dade care far more about getting new roads than this everglades restoration bull$it. They sit and sit and sit and sit and sit. And every road is clogged unless you are driving past 9pm or before 7am. people have been bitching about the everglades for 30 years, spent billions. Its been the biggest boondoggle in the history of America trying to return these areas to how they were before 20 million people moved in around them. Just build the road Marco and stop pandering for votes. Jesus.

Say something about Gwen Graham's "Mall in The Everglades" you never Trumper obstructionist. Or are you counting the days when you and low energy Jeb can go shopping there together in hot bromance????
