FAA Sending $4.2 Million to Orlando Sanford International Airport

July 31, 2018 - 3:00pm

The federal government is sending more than $4 million to help expand and improve  Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB).

On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla. announced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA),  was sending $4.2 million to SFB to improve its operations and customer experience including expanding aircraft parking. These funds are in addition to $5.6 million that Murphy announced in September to expand a main taxi runway at SFB and add four new gates to the airport.

Murphy weighed in on the funds, saying they will help Central Florida.

“It’s my pleasure to announce this federal investment in Orlando Sanford International Airport as it continues to grow and expand operations,” Murphy said.  “This grant will create good-paying jobs in the short term and sustain economic development in the long term for the Sanford area.  I’m proud to support SFB, and I’ll keep doing all I can to help meet our region’s growing transportation infrastructure needs.”

SFB’s leadership applauded Murphy’s efforts to secure the funds from the FAA.

“These projects represent critical infrastructural improvements to sustain our continued growth.  Congressman Murphy’s support and understanding of our needs going forward is gratefully acknowledged by the Orlando Sanford International Airport,” said SFB President Diane Crews.

SFB continues to rank as one of the fastest growing airports in the country, going from less than 1.6 million passengers in 2011 to this year when it is expected to have 3 million passengers. SFB helps add more than 23,000 jobs and more than $3 billion to Central Florida.

Murphy was elected in an upset in 2016 when she defeated longtime U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla. She is a top target for the GOP in November but has been penciled in as the favorite by several national pundits.
