The Art of Plantation Politics

July 23, 2018 - 12:45pm

There is nothing like campaign season to cause white politicians to magically get the black Holy Ghost.

It never fails.

Every church they can find, they are in it! Worshiping and talking to Jesus and singing old Negro spirituals like they themselves were raised on the plantation.

Only, once campaign season is over, those congregations never see or hear from those politicians again.

Well, not until the next election cycle rolls around.

Take Philip Levine, who is running for Florida governor.

He has tweeted out photo after photo of him in black places of worship along the I-4 corridor.

I’m expecting him to start rolling around on the floor, speaking in tongues in a minute.

Yet, I’ve not seen one photo of Levine campaigning in a synagogue (he’s Jewish) or a Catholic Church.

Why is it that black voters are thought to adhere to the pied piper syndrome?

Why do white politicians think we are rats, to be led to the polls by a flute-playing person, to vote for them?

This doesn’t happen in ANY other demographic.

Other houses of worship get the respect of not having their time interrupted.

Not black folks. Our religious leaders get offered money to “lead the flock one way or another.”

Don’t say it doesn’t happen, because it does.

These politicians get one person to act like the “coyote” of immigration, and transport them into the churches, where they go all “Hallelujah and praise the Lord.”

It’s comical!

Do black congregations still fall for this tomfoolery?

I hope not.

They have to know that if a politician isn’t a year-round black church-goer, this person is just using the church to get what he or she wants at the moment, and that’s the black Vote.

Govern yourselves accordingly.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This article made me smile. You identified the Democrats but we also know the Republicans do the same thing.

So, what should we have said about Obama attending a white church? Hypocrisy abounds, but not surprisingly...

I keep remembering just why Thomas Jefferson's own, personal memorial lists only 3 achievements. The University of Virginia, the author of the Declaration of Independence, and the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. For those who don't know - this last personal achievement (Separation of Church and State) was codified in the First Amendment to the Constitution. But I'll bet not many here have a clue as to what this means. Sad. But then, I'll bet many don't know who Jefferson was either. https://www.virginiahistory.org/collections-and-resources/virginia-history-explorer/thomas-jefferson

Gillum is the one pandering in his bid to climb the brass ring. Wimes is a syncophant. Cates and Burgan are paid spinners.

I guess “syncophant” is what happens when one uses words out of their vocabulary range!!! LOL!

Pardon me for the typo.

As long as Wimes says Hillary Rodham Clinton did and does this exact thing in black churches, telling the black congregants, "We come tooo farrrr to turn back now!" The Pandering Queen Hillary should have been the first panderer Wimes mentioned, then Levine.

Look at Korn and Levinson in Broward. Disgusting. It's not a sign of respect. It's pandering for votes. How many times in non-election years have they visited black churches? Or any churches, or any houses of worship different from their own.

The definition of uncle Tom---->https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Uncle%20Tom------>Is there a similar word for a white person?------>Try as some might, they will only get the crumbs that fall off the big table,

Interesting!

Why DON’T they visit non-black churches and synagogues? Why aren’t they in mosques? Why IS it just black churches that they go to and do this???

Your ignorance becomes you if you think politicians are only visiting black churches. It is better to stay silent if you don't bother to know...

Plantation Politics? The very inference is in itself offensive... What is a candidate to do then, just ignore the churches they don't normally frequent and not get their message out? This is a no-win situation in your make believe world of black-only politics. If they visit, they are pandering, if they don't show, they ignore the black vote. You have made it clear in your column the true source of your intentions, "If a politician isn't a year-round black church-goer, this person is just using the church to get what he or she wants at the moment, and that's the black vote. Govern yourselves accordingly. " In other words, if your are not black, don't bother. You are the Repubs wet dream come true. If a non-black person gets the nominee, don't bother to show up and vote. You are part of the reason the Repubs have owned this state for the last 20 or so years. And, if folks listen to you, probably the foreseeable future...

“What” reminds me of MLK’s comments while in a Birmingham jail: “First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." Keep speaking up and speaking out, Leslie! To hell with these white moderates who want to silence your much needed voice!!

Uh, that made no sense...

The commenter, what, is stupid and is “what” is wrong with the Democratic Party now. Instead of campaigning towards the black community like other communities, white politicians think they can go to one location and get the bulk of the black vote there. They do it to save money. It’s disrespectful and condescending. For some reason, they think black voters don’t have a mind of our own, and will just follow the pastor. That doesn’t work these days.

Exactly. They also do it when they have had absolutely no contact with the black community prior. It should be a signal to the congregations that these people aren't worth their vote.

I get what Wimes is saying. Why is this same behavior not exhibited in white churches? Why aren’t these politicians visiting white churches and synagogues? I think it’s a legitimate question. It does reek of overseer type situations.

hopefully, they don't...

Maybe Levine is “Jews for Jesus”!! Hahahahaha!!!
