Gas Prices Continue to Rise Across Florida

May 14, 2018 - 9:15am

Gas prices across Florida rose almost 10 cents in the past week, according to a new report from AAA.

On Sunday, the average gallon of gas cost $2.82 in the Sunshine State, the highest they have been since November 2014. Despite the increase, gas prices in Florida remain below the national average which stood at $2.87 per gallon on Sunday, 53 cents higher than this time last year. At the start of last week, the average gas price in Florida was $2.73 per gallon.

"Gas prices are their highest in years, yet that doesn't seem to be slowing motorists down," said Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for  AAA and the Auto Club Group. "The latest round of figures from the EIA shows that gasoline demand is significantly higher than this time last year. A strong economy is helping to fuel motorists along, as we approach the most traveled Memorial Day in more than a dozen years. Those people affected by the higher prices at the pump, are likely cutting back on other expenses like shopping and dining out."

Jenkins noted that there were a number of factors for the price increases including higher demanded with the start of summer looming, less supply, tensions with Iran and the highest oil prices in four year.

The West Palm Beach-Boca Raton market easily had the most expensive gas in Florida with prices averaging $2.92 per gallon. That was followed by  Tallahassee and Fort Lauderdale where prices stood at $2.85 per gallon Sunday.

The Villages had the least expensive gas in Florida with prices averaging $2.78 per gallon. That was followed by the Punta Gorda and the Orlando markets where prices stood at $2.79 per gallon on Sunday.
