Former Vice President Joe Biden, a possible presidential candidate in 2020, threw his support to Nancy Soderberg who is looking to win a seat Democrats have their eyes on as they look to flip Congress in November.

Biden announced on Monday that he was supporting Soderberg who is running to replace U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., who is running for governor. Soderberg served on the National Security Council during the Clinton presidency, to replace him. Bill Clinton also named Soderberg as an alternate representative to the United Nations where she often represented the U.S. on the Security Council.  She also led the Public Service Leadership Program at the University of North Florida. Soderberg stumbled during her first bid for public office when she ran for a state Senate seat in 2012.

“I’ve known Nancy for three decades since she first started her work in the Senate," said Biden. "She is a lifelong public servant who has served at the highest levels of government. At the White House and as an ambassador to the United Nations, Nancy brokered international peace deals, and helped develop and promote U.S. national security policy. She understands what it’s like to bring both sides to the table and solve complex issues. She’s been tested and she’s delivered.

"I’m supporting Nancy because she’s a problem solver, and will fight for the values of the 6th District: growing the middle class, creating jobs you can raise a family on, ensuring every family has access to affordable healthcare and every child can get an affordable education,” Biden added. “She has the knowledge and experience to make a difference and get things done for the people of the 6th District. We have the power to bring change to Washington in 2018, and it starts with electing Nancy Soderberg to Congress."

“I am honored to have the support of Vice President Biden, who has dedicated his life to standing up for American men, women and children," said Soderberg. "I’ve known Joe for years, and his leadership and dedication to our country has inspired not only myself, but millions of others. I'm thrilled to have him on my team in this election, and will work every day to continue fighting for the families in the Florida 6th.”

While she has been named to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s (DCCC) “Red to Blue” program, Soderberg does not have an open shot at her party’s nomination as physician Stephen Sevigny and attorney John Upchurch are also running in the primary. There are three Republican candidates as former state Rep. Fred Costello is making a third bid for the seat, veteran Mike Waltz who served as an aide to Vice President Dick Cheney and businessman and veteran John Ward are running on the Republican side. The district is generally considered favorable though not secure for the GOP.
