Marco Rubio, Florida Republicans Urge Trump to Denounce Raul Castro's Successor

With Cuban dictator Raúl Castro set to retire next month, Republicans from the Florida delegation are already taking aim at whoever replaces him.

On Friday, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and several Republicans representing Florida in the U.S. House--Carlos Curbelo, gubernatorial hopeful Ron DeSantis, Mario Diaz-Balart, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Ted Yoho--wrote President Donald Trump, calling on him to “denounce Castro’s successor as illegitimate in the absence of free, fair, and multiparty elections, and call upon the international community to support the right of the Cuban people to decide their future.” DeSantis joined Rubio in taking the lead in the letter.

Rubio sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee while Ros-Lehtinen was the first woman to lead the House Foreign Affairs Committee and currently chairs the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee while Yoho leads the House Asia and Pacific Subcommittee.

“We write today to thank you for holding the Castro regime accountable for its oppression and ongoing human rights abuses against the Cuban people, and for furthering U.S. national security and foreign policy interests of promoting democracy,” the Florida Republicans wrote. “We also request, within all applicable rules and regulations, that you continue to work toward empowering the Cuban people in their struggle for liberty

Rubio and the House Republicans noted that Trump weighed in on Cuba in a speech he made in Miami back in June.

“For nearly six decades, the Cuban people have suffered under communist domination," Trump said in that speech. “To this day, Cuba is ruled by the same people who killed tens of thousands of their own citizens, who sought to spread their repressive and failed ideology throughout our hemisphere, and who once tried to host enemy nuclear weapons 90 miles from our shores. . . This is the simple truth of the Castro regime. My administration will not hide from it, excuse it, or glamorize it. And we will never, ever be blind to it. We know what’s going on and we remember what happened.”

Pointing to that speech, Rubio and the House Republicans from Florida called on Trump to  “denounce Castro’s successor as illegitimate in the absence of free, fair, and multiparty elections, and call upon the international community to support the right of the Cuban people to decide their future.”

“As you know, dictator Raúl Castro has said that he will step down from the presidency on April 19, 2018. However, we know that a predetermined, charade election orchestrated by regime officials will continue the dictatorship,” they wrote. “This sham election is yet another example of the regime’s dictatorial repression of fundamental freedoms which must not be recognized by those who value freedom and democracy. This, along with your ongoing efforts to restrict financial transactions with the Cuban military that aid the Castro regime, will assist the Cuban people in their goal of self-government. Thank you for your consideration of this request. We look forward to continuing to work with your administration on this matter.”

The Cuban people want to revolt but the repressive control is so overwhelming that makes that impossible. On top of it Obama's policy did not help at all. The peoples of Eastern Europe could not do that either during more than 40 years. Thanks to Reagan's policies they finally recovered their liberty.

I would love to see more leaders around the world accusing and condemning the undemocratic change of power in Cuba. Castro's regime is based on repression and nothing else. keeping the Cuban people isolated and away from any democratic tools for change is the main goal of the dictatorship.

can't agree more with Rubio………The people in those nations , N korea, china, cuba ,have been tortured by dictators, their Struggle for humanright absolutely need help from internation community.

To some the Cold War is still going. For those Cubans living in the US that want a change in Cuba - Please rise, we will stage the ships to take you there. Funny, how we stock our shelves with products from China, buy furniture from Vietnam (After losing 58, 000 Troops there), Russia has become our buddies and yet we let these wanna-be's tell us about how bad things are in Cuba. Yet - they are the most educated people in this Hemisphere. To the Rubio's and the other clowns who want to continue this "Cold War" Stand up to the NRA the way you want to Bully Cuba.

Excuse me sir, do you like in the US or Cuba? If you live in the US then shush because you don’t know what these people are going through.

And it is over only to the ignorant and foolish.

What if Cuba started putting pressure on the US for continuing to politically oppress Native Americans? Let the past rest and look to the future with Cuba. The Cuban people welcomed the communist revolt and accepted it rule for a generation. Let them rule themselves. If you really want to change things in Cuba, work with them and introduce them to the benefits of capitalism.

Introduce the Cuban people to the benefits of capitalism? They do not need it, they know the benefits of capitalism better than Anonymous. But the robber regime would never let them practice it because that would make the rulers accountable for their crimes. They would also have to give back the valuable property the stole (confiscated for the use of the communist elite) to the legitimate owners.

“Oppress “??!! LOL!

"Little Marco" gathers his 'swamp boy gang' and urges them to whine to "Big Bad Donald", about the tough boys who bullied and 'picked on' "Lil Marco's" family members back in the "old neighborhood", and just maybe "Big Bad D" will YELL at those 'bullys' AGAIN who still frighten "Lil Marco" to this very day (even though he has never "set foot in the 'old neighborhood' that his family always tells him stories about). 《"Don't cry for Cuba "Lil Marco",.. your "♡" is here with "Big Bad D"! 》

( But the "Congressional Black Caucus" will happily convey "Lil Marco's" angry feelings to the "bullies in the old neighborhood" on the "CBC's" NEXT regular Taxpayer funded "class trip vacation" to laud the "Castro Legend" and the "Cuban way of communist life"! ) { SAD, huh Folks?... but then, THAT'S YOUR "CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS" hard at "work"! ! !...}

Col. Allan West was right about that caucus.

C Breeze - your racist nature keeps shining quite clear. You're OK with Don The Con spending 30 million on a parade that even the troops don't want. Are You? Taxpayers Funded mind you. You're OK with that. If you read up on Cuba - the ruthless bastard he replaced was not a nice man either.

Jesus! Will you just get off Cuba's back. We didn't get this riled up about China, Vietnam, Soviet/Russia. McCarthy is dead. Communism is the way of life for Cubano's. If they wanted change, they would have revolted by now. Obama was right. Normalize relations.
