Last week, two congressmen from Florida brought out a bill to crack down on arms sales to Iran.

U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, D-Fla., unveiled the “No Arms Sales to Iran Act” which is being co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla. The proposal would have the State Department report to Congress on countries providing Iran with restricted weapons and technology. Crist’s bill would also prohibit aid to countries providing Iran with weapons or helping develop its nuclear program.

Crist, who was first elected to Congress last year, made his case for the bill last week.

"Iran's aggressive actions remain a threat to America, Israel, and the rest of the world,” Crist said. “As the top state sponsor of terrorism, Iran's nefarious pursuit of restricted weapons further destabilizes the region.

"Our bill sends a strong message to countries considering arms deals with Iran that supporting state sponsors of terrorism will not be tolerated,” Crist added.

Bilirakis insisted that the Obama administration’s deal with Iran on its nuclear program was doing nothing to slow down its efforts to develop weapons.

"Despite the Iran Deal, Iran continues to demonstrate its commitment to tyranny through its continued support and spread of terror in an effort to destabilize the Middle East," said Bilirakis. "As we work with allies to keep the pressure on Iran, we must ensure that our efforts are not being undermined by other nations and, if so, that they are exposed and held accountable."

The bill was sent to the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee last week.

Last week, Bilirakis, who sits on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and is a co-chairman of the Hellenic-Israel Alliance and the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, met with Vassilis Kikilias, a member of the Hellenic Parliament and a spokesman for New Democracy, Greece’s right-of-center party. Bilirakis and Kikilias talked about Greece’s role in the region including its support of Cyprus and Israel. They also talked about increased energy exploration in the region.

“Mr. Kikilias holds an important leadership position within the government of Greece, and represents a strong voice for the future of the country,” Bilirakis said after the meeting. “I appreciate his clear vision for ensuring a path to economic prosperity, improving security within the region and partnering with the United States to enhance energy production.  I look forward to continuing to work with him to strengthen the mutually beneficial alliance between our two great countries ,”
