Vern Buchanan Calls on Donald Trump to Ban African Lion Trophies

From his perch as co-chairman of the Animal Protection Caucus in Congress, a Florida Republican is urging President Donald Trump to restore the ban on allowing African lion trophies to be brought into the United States.

Noting there are less than 20,000 African lions, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., called on Trump to overturn the U.S. Interior Department’s decision to allow these trophies. The Interior Department’s decision has allowed hunters to collect lion trophies from Zambia and Zimbabwe as opposed to just managed lands in South Africa.

“Allowing lion heads to be brought into the U.S. as trophies will only encourage the slaughter of these magnificent animals,” Buchanan said. “President Trump should reverse his Interior secretary’s decision and keep the ban on African lion trophies.”

Buchanan noted that last month Trump froze the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (FWS) proposal to end the ban on African elephant trophies.

In recent years, Buchanan, who sits on both the U.S. House Budget and Ways and Means Committees, has been active on animal welfare issues.  Last year, he  teamed up with U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-NM,  to urge the Interior Department to end plans to exterminate or sell more than 45,000 wild horses. Buchanan has also been leading the charge on Capitol Hill to stop slaughtering horses for human consumption.

The Bradenton congressman has also been active in trying to keep manatees covered under the Endangered Species Act. Earlier this year, Buchanan protested the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to downgrade manatees from “endangered” to “threatened.” Buchanan also teamed up with U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla.,  bringing out  the “Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act," a proposal banning the slaughter of cats and dogs for human consumption. Buchanan was named legislator of the year by the Humane Society of the United States in 2016.

Now, Monica....don't get your panties all in a wad. While some animals are killed as "trophy heads" the vast majority are killed for the pleasure of being outdoors, the fun in the chase, the shooting sport (particularly birds) the pleasure of seeing good dogs at work doing what they have been bred for over centuries - and the food they provide. Most of us do not shoot anything we don't plan on eating. So you don't like steak? Pork chops? Chicken? Unless you eat only hot dogs, which I am not sure contain meat, what do you eat?

Save these beautiful and magestic creatures! Not only lions, but all the animals that the uncaring people kill for trophies. They don't belong on someone's wall! They deserve to be wild and free!

Now, Linda, that's downright mean spirited. So take it you don't eat meat? Don't enjoy a steak with fries? Before you speak of that of which you know nothing, may I suggest you visit a slaughter house?. You know, where they line up the cows, chop them with an axe and let the flop on the floor a bit before hoisting them up on a big hook to be cut into choice pieces and hamburger. Might change your mind about hunting. And if we didn't hunt the animal population would explode. Like the Africans in Africa. Mostly because of the monsoon of Yankees from NY and NJ that are coming here because of the ASTRONOMICAL tax burden in those states. Democrats, of course. They are wrecking natural Florida with more houses. We now have more than 20 million people on a fragile peninsula suited for maybe 3 million. Now, if we could get rid of all the Democrats, all the newly minted welfare Puerto Ricans, all the lawyers and all the politicians things might work out better for the critters.

Ban trophy hunting. It is barbaric. It’s not a sport- animals can’t shoot back. Too bad because then there would be fewer hunters!’

LOL. Just don't think I can add to CBreeze comment. Altho last time I checked it cost $60.000 for a lion license. The girls may be surprised that lions breed like....well...cats Reason most of them gone is because white ranchers and farmers have been run out of the continent. So the land could be given back to the tribes. Who promptly destroyed, looted, raped and killed all it contained. Think Mugabe. Zimbabwe. And since the tribes elected only African thieves who stole everything, the tribes are starving. Kill anything they can get $20 for. And if a starving lion waxes a native - most likely because he has a spear thru his belly that rotted, why, he is killed. Know I will be accused of nasty things but the problem with Africa is too many Africans.

Check out commenters herein, "Rosa", "Joy", "Marline", "Carole", "Christine", "Laura", and "Susan";... WHAT might they have in common do you think ???... Cats?, Birkenstocks?, bitter divorce?, failed expectations from the old Feminist movement? Low self esteem? Unrequited love? Too many "Mix & Match" failures? 20 extra pounds? A hatred for turtle soup?...... These poor souls are "Legion" in our society !

C'mon Vern ! ! !... (WHY THIS?... Is it because you are the "Congressional Lying King" ?) How about banning "Attendance Trophies" in education facilities ALL ACROSS THIS COUNTRY !

Let them run free, protect wildlife !!

Three cheers for Rep. Vern Buchanan and his efforts.

Making trophies out of endangered species is criminal, immoral, and barbaric. It encourages trafficking and poaching, which diminishes already grossly diminished numbers. I’m with Rep. Buchanan. Trump must overturn the path taken by the Interior Department.

Trophy hunting should be banned in all countries. The killing of endangered, threatened, or imperiled species for entertainment, greed, and thrills is just plain sick. We need to protect all lions, elephants, rhino, giraffes, pangolins, and others from wildlife traffickers, the bush meat trade, habitat conflicts, and trophy hunts. Eco-tourism has proven to be ethically sustainable and humane for both animals and communities.

The Trump family find it necessary to murder everything worldwide because it makes them feel like men hahaha that's a joke they are Murdering Morons

These are GOD's creatures!! The majesty that the lion represents is undeniable. Making them a "trophy" is inhumane and unconscionable. STOP THE MADNESS!! Live and Let Live!!

Save the Wildlife!
