Florida Divided on What to Do With Confederate Monuments, Health-Care, Immigration, Poll Finds

October 24, 2017 - 9:00am

The University of North Florida (UNF) released a poll on Tuesday taking the pulse of Florida voters on issues ranging from what to do with monuments honoring the Confederacy and its leaders to health-care and immigration.

Asked about what to do with Confederate monuments and statues, 47 percent of Florida voters want them moved to museums while 40 percent want them to stay where they are. Only 9 percent of those surveyed want to remove them completely.

There is a major partisan divide on the issue as 67 percent of Florida Republicans want to keep the monuments and statues where they are while 60 percent of Democrats in the Sunshine State want to move them to museums. More than half of voters outside the major parties--54 percent--want to move the monuments and statues to museums while 34 percent want them to remain where they are.

Michael Binder, the faculty director of the Public Opinion Research Lab at UNF, said on Tuesday that this partisan divide could impact how the Legislature proceeds on the matter.

“As Tallahassee contends with newly introduced House Bill 235 dealing with Confederate statues, Floridians should take note of the partisan divisions on this issue,” Binder said. “Republicans dominate the Legislature, and the Republican voters don’t want the statues moved; this presents a real dilemma for legislators facing public pressure to do something about this issue.”

Asked about the role of government in health-care, 28 percent of those surveyed say it should insure everyone while 13 percent think it should insure most people. Almost a third of those surveyed--31 percent--think the government and private insurers should have equal roles in providing insurance while 13 percent think private insurance should cover most people and 11 percent think private insurers should insure everyone.

“In the wake of Bernie Sanders’ presidential run and the struggles with Obamacare, there appears to be support for government to take on a larger role in providing health insurance to Floridians,” Binder insisted.

Asked about immigration, 42 percent think the current level of level immigration should be kept while 30 percent want to increase it. While 7 percent are not sure, 20 percent of those surveyed want to decrease the number of legal immigrants.

“For all of the debate about illegal immigration and undocumented immigrants, Florida is very supportive of legal immigration,” Binder said.

Turning to taxes, 67 percent of those surveyed prefer a progressive tax while 29 percent back a flat tax.

The poll of 838 registered voters in Florida was taken from Oct. 11 through Oct. 17 and had a margin of error of +/- 3.39 percent.

Do you remember how shocked we were, including the media, when ISIS destroyed all the statues and buildings built thousands of years ago which can never be replaced? Now they want to do the same here and feel justified. What a bunch of hypocrites. That includes the media because, if anything, they should be defending keeping the statues that we have because it is part of American History. Those that are demanding their removal could not light a candle to what our forefathers went through. It is also a sign that they are ignorant of our American History. If they had been taught what and how our forefathers fought and gave up their wealth and life to defend and preserve our freedom, they wouldn't even be considering this.

Fl Senator Book sponsored SB224 to remove the birthdays of Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Memorial Day. Can you imagine the arrogance of this person whose 501C3 Lauren's Kids apparently got or is about to get $1.5 million. So while she's destroying our heritage, she's eating at the public trough!!! Her office is in Plantation. She needs to be visited and"petitioned for redress of our grievances" (our 1st Amnd. right which many of these state legislators. Lee and Jefferson were devout Christians; Book is jewish. I find that interesting. Wake up Floridians!!!

You cannot be a good Christian and a slave owner or war criminal fool...

The winner of this argument is our federal funded, teacher's union school system. Here's why knowing our history defines us as a people, a family, a community, state, and nation. The educational requirements have all but disappeared in public schools especially American history and Civics over the last seventy years. As a 4th grader in the 1950's, I knew more about history and civics than a large majority non-history or college grads today. I learned about states-rights vs federal government power. That's the primer for the Civil War/War-Between-the-States; for each States to Constitutionally secede from the Union. This was the device that the Democratic south used to legally leave the union. Thus the flint that set off the war by the Union lead by Lincoln and the Republicans. The North were the called the "Radical Republicans" for a good reason, they later brought abolishment of slavery into the mix. The south wanted the union north to leave their sovereign independent state starting with South Carolina. The South was solid Democrats(learn about Pres Andy Jackson and states right) and the north were a majority Republican (federalist). Pres Lincoln issued the "Emancipation Proclamation" to free the slaves only in the "rebellious states." But not slaves in the Union state till toward the end of the war. After the war, the south was still solid Democrats because of the Carpet-baggers. Also that's when the KKK was born, Jim Crow/segregation laws passed, etc. Most Citizens today do not know that the 1964 Civil Rights act was passed by a Republican congress for a Democrat President. But concerning the Union and Confederate statutes were was part of the healing process for the country and still to recognize both the honorable Northern and Southern soldiers who fought. The Southern for States Rights that is now being trampled on by today's big-government Democrats and Republicans. My advice to learn about "Reconstruction Era" and later the Indian Pacification Campaigns. Finally how the Federal Government stomped on Indian Nations rights and their individual rights as they did the southern states. Finally, when our Constitution was accepted by the citizens, it was considered a radical idea: the Sovereign is the citizens, not a King, Emperor, Czar, etc. Therefore, very citizen and immigrant needs, no-must be schooled in the U.S. Constitution, it's history and the history of the USA... all of it. It's "shining city (of liberty and freedom) on a hill. Still is...for now.

Freed slaves fought for the North idiot. History cannot be about just the parts you pick and choose that appeal to your argument. That's what supremacists do, they pull out the parts that are appealing to their argument, while disregarding the parts that are not. It is everyone's history, not just white folks...

Freedmen Southern slaves were conscripted into the Union Army; Northern slaves CONTINUED to be "Northern slaves" until quite some time after the war was over...

You need to go back to being a Northern slave in your native NY dumbass...

All other polls taken have been in 70 percentile for keeping Confederate monuments and memorials. Perhaps the snowflakes on Campus at UNF were the ones being polled?

Kevin, STOP with these damn "polls" you seem to love so much!!! I perceive you as being a "history buff"; and , as such, I know you must understand that destroying Confederate monuments IS destroying American history and culture: Over 600,000 AMERICAN boys died in that political war....Does it make one whit of difference exactly how many were Southern or Northern boys..? NO ! This "politically correct revisionist history nonsense" MUST STOP!.. Lincoln didn't free Northern slaves, his intent was just to "cripple" the South's workforce to "grab on to" part of the SOUTH's 80 plus million dollar income from European trade in cotton and rice (What politition THEN OR NOW would not want a piece of that, when the North's annual budget was only about 92 million dollars annually at about that time), IT WAS ALL ABOUT "ECONOMICS"... (as well as the impending demise of the political "WHIG PARTY"... sort of similar to today's Democrat Party..).

Your idiocy continues to show itself, nearly constantly. The civil war was about slavery and state's rights idiot. Those statues were created as an affront to the "Jim Crow" days to try to "put down" the civil rights movement. No one in their right mind should celebrate that anywhere else but in a museum. It would be different if it was a monument of the "boys who died" as you say, that is honorable, but to have a big, giant statue of Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis, who for all practical purposes, were war criminals, posted in the square, is about as idiotic as you are, and you're from NY dumbo. We are all true southerners and true veterans, not porch pirates like you fool...

The Civil War was about "States Rights" sovereignty, but it was NOT about slavery. That was a northern "war tactic" employed by Lincoln via the "Emancation Proclamation" to cripple the South's labor force. Slavery STILL EXISTS, and is employed in MOST of the world's populations. The progeny of America's former slaves would STILL BE SLAVES in any other slave country still existing today ! So, count your blessings that you are AMERICAN CITIZENS, and that AMERICA'S FOUNDERS created the Declaration of Independence and our Republic's Constitution ! ! !

This should NOT be decided by a survey, let the people vote. . . .if you let the people vote, I guarantee the statues will stay right where they are.

Surveys don't ask EVERYONE . . .only a percentage. This should NOT be decided by a survey. . . . Polls are flawed. All the election polls said Hillary would win, and we saw how that went. Let the People vote!

"Overpopulation in the United States will become THE single greatest issue facing Americans in the 21st century. We either solve it proactively or nature will solve it brutally for us via water shortages, energy crisis, air pollution, gridlock, species extinction and worse." - Frosty Wooldridge Endless immigration legal and illegal is unsustainable. Nations must have borders and immigration laws must be enforced. Developers, Zoning Committees, and City Councils need to be held accountable for permitting development on wetlands, low lying areas, swamps, and flood zones. Over development destroys the quality of life in communities. There needs to be an moratorium on development and a moratorium on immigration. English must be the official language, too.

imagine the irony if the same concept applied to your ancestors or the founding fathers there Carlos. With a name like that, it would seem a very recent, painful concept for you to imagine. Thankfully, you did not have to, and neither should those who come legally as guaranteed in the U. S. Constitution either through birthright or naturalization.

September 20, 2016 - Washington, D.C.) - One of the most important factors in achieving environmental sustainability in the U.S. is to reduce immigration, finds a new report, "U.S. Immigration and the Environment," by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). America's rapidly growing population is one of the biggest impediments to meeting critical environmental goals, and immigration is by far the largest factor driving U.S. population growth. I agree with Carlos. Endless immigration is unsustainable.

Erasing History is Marxism. "The first step in liquidating a people is to erase its memory. Destroy its books, its culture, and its history. Then have somebody write new books, manufacture a new culture, invent a new history. Before long the nation will begin to forget what it is and what it was." - Milan Kundera

nobody is advocating for erasing the history, just moving it and not celebrating it openly. Otherwise, that would be synonymous with Poland having Nazi statues in their squares, which to common sense folk is idiocy. The same concept applies here...

"truth giver", you're "living a lie"; and the sad part is that in your twisted logic, you're totally unaware of it!

talk about living a lie, from the porch of your trailer... Get a job and take your fat ass back to NY poser...

No. Truth giver is right about his comment. You are just incapable of comprehending such and easy concept.

Let the people decide... The vote should direct what government is doing, instead of the current deciding factor, how much cash they get and from whom?

Leave the statutes alone and get a job and mind your own business. If you can't pay for a doctor, sorry bout your luck. As far as immigration, we don't want it. Any of it.

Seems you are thankfully in the minority dumb ass...

"Trapper Keeper", I recognize your "spoiler stupidity": It's really YOU "Fart", isn't it?

You were your mom's fart...
