Florida politicians in Washington, D.C. offered words of condolence after House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in Alexandria, Virginia early Wednesday morning.

Details of the shooting are still fuzzy, but reports say Republican congressmen were practicing for a charity baseball game in Alexandria.

Scalise was in critical condition at the time of this article's release and several others were injured.

The shooter was caught by Capitol Police shortly after the incident.

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., was also at the baseball practice and said a man came up to him before practice and asked him if the men practicing on the field were Republicans or Democrats. It is unknown whether the man was the shooter.

U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., was also present but left the practice moments before the shooting took place.

“I left a few minutes before this happened,” DeSantis said on Fox News Wednesday.

Here’s how Florida politicians reacted to the news:

President Donald Trump:
"The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected."

U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla. (via Twitter):

As usual ""My thoughts and prayers are with the family". This from people that have not had a thought in years and would no more pray than a rhino would ride a motorcycle. If there Is any good to come from a bad scene its that only people like politicians and bankers were shot. We can spare a few of them.

DEMOCRATS have brought this hatred upon America ALL BY THEMSELVES ! They have never believed, and always ignored, the "unintended consequences" of their despicable actions, aided by a complicit media complex !

Only republicans, were targeted beacause of the verbal hate, visually hate on the other side when will the Democrats take responsibility

Historically, Democrats are killedby gun shot or plane crash as Republicans thrive. So, Mary, stick with your Alt Facts & die of starvation, eviction, & no healthcare. But put ALL THAT BLAME where it belongs, you Cretin

It's this very type of hateful, uncalled for, vindicative behavior that causes these horrific events to thrive. Whether from the left or the right, it does not matter.....but it lives on as evidenced here. God help our Nation. Thank you God that the Capitol Police were there. Watch over their wounds....

People, stupid people are at each other's throats because of partisanship. My side ride your side wrong is the central problem.

Why was he shot?

Because he was Republican. The question should have arose in DeSantis' concerning why is this guy asking this kind of question. Dead giveaway.

Correct, so Desantis departed without a care.

That is now the call sign of liberals who hate the right, just like radical Islam yells "Allahu Akbar," liberals yell "Are you Republican?" just before attacking or killing. Idiots. Hateful, venomous azzes!!

Yeah, don't you just hate people who divide large groups of people into caricatures that reflect their prejudices?
