Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam has finally put an end to years of speculation: he’s officially running for governor of Florida in 2018.

Putnam filed his paperwork to run for the state’s highest office on Monday.

“I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world because I get to call Florida home,” Putnam told the Tampa Bay Times. “It’s our responsibility as Floridians to keep our economy at work, to increase access to high quality education, to fiercely protect our personal freedoms, to keep our state safe, and to welcome our veterans home with open arms.”

Putnam has certainly been acting the part of candidate in recent months. On Saturday, he gave a rousing campaign-style speech to a group of GOP party faithful at the Republican Party of Florida’s spring quarterly meeting.

In the speech, Putnam highlighted his own accomplishments as state agriculture commissioner while pushing to continue conservative values in the Sunshine State.

“We can only accomplish what we want to accomplish with conservative principles,” he told the RPOF.

Putnam talked about focusing on small Florida businesses, lowering statewide unemployment and respecting police officers. He promised to not let up on giving Florida families jobs and opportunities under a conservative banner which he said makes Florida the apple of conservatives’ eyes around the country.

“We are the envy of the nation for conservative values and a conservative approach to governing the third largest state in the nation,” he explained.

Putnam wasted no time touting his own accomplishments as Florida’s agriculture commissioner over the weekend.

He highlighted numbers of concealed weapons permits (now up to 1.6 million) and protecting the Second Amendment, which he said were important ways to give Floridians their God-given constitutional rights and to keeping Florida conservative.

Meanwhile, Putnam continues reel in cash through his Florida Grown political committee laying the groundwork for his 2018 campaign.

In March, Putnam raised over a million dollars in the committee, adding to a total of nearly $11 million raised over the last two years.

Putnam isn’t the only Republican considering running for the job. House Speaker Richard Corcoran and Senate Appropriations Chair Jack Latvala are rumored to be feeling out the possibility as well.

On the Democratic side, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and Orlando businessman Chris King have already thrown their hats into the ring, while former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham will likely announce her candidacy Tuesday morning in Miami.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Adam Putnam is a terrible choice to run for Governor. If you care about "Property rights," then don't let Putnam Happen.

Is Adam Putnam a Trump supporter who has a record of getting the job DONE? We need to focus on getting the best candidate to replace Governor Scott and not encourage a large field of politicians to muddy the primary ticket. As has been demonstrated in the national election, none of those 16 Republican candidates could have beat Mrs. Clinton. We need a dynamic Republican candidate who can wholeheartedly take advantage of Trump's plan to return more power to the States so we can decide locally how we want our healthcare and education systems to work. Most important quality the Republican Governor candidate must have is: Can he or she WIN the governorship in Florida.

Who wasn't a Trump supporter? That was for his own career not Trump's election.

With Adam Putnam stepping out it is time for Katie Edwards to run for Ag Commissioner.

With Adam Putnam stepping out it is time for Katie Edwards to run for Ag Commissioner.

Adam Putnam will be a great Florida Governor. Others may seek to be "first female or african-american governor of Florida" while Mr. Putnam can be "first Florida redhead governor of Florida" with his heart Florida Grown.

It's about time Florida had a redhead governor. It's been a long time coming.

Put the guy in who concocted the Kayak and canoe tax and floated it behind the name of one of his staff members? I dont think so.

As a registered Democrat I cannot support Graham's extreme leftist policies. They have proven to be terrible for the economy. Putnam will get my vote.

Putnam has my vote but he should ditch the bangs. Liberals (the diversity & tolerance group) will attack his appearance.

Great news! He was a solid legislator, great AG commissioner and will be a great Gov.

Putnam runs the Marijuana Eradication Program, is against Amendment Two, doesn't believe the science, and opposes hemp.

your "truth" (as usual) is a lie

All the reason to vote for Putnam for Governor!

Adam Putnam has done a great job as Commissioner of Agriculture, an I think he will do a great job as Governor.

You gotta be kidding me. This guy's biggest accomplishment is giving out concealed carry permits? Please.

Our 2nd Amendment ALONE is a fine reason to vote for him

"Aunt Bea" would be almost as happy for your decision to "run for Governor" as I am !!! GO "OPIE" !... You've got MY vote ! ! !

Wow. That's one (1) lost vote.

~H~U~R~R~A~Y~!~ Perfect man for the job, a real Florida native who UNDERSTANDS Florida. He's got my vote.

Graham vs. Putnam makes for an epic gubernatorial battle, and hopefully, we will all benefit as citizens of this great state because of it...

Putnam WORKS; Graham can only fantasize about seizing another (more lucrative) "government mammary" to feed off of...(Just as she did during her brief sojourn in District TWO)

What does Putnam work at as you say?

As a registered Republican, I can see myself leaning towards Graham. Putnam is just too inexperienced to carry the load of 'Governor'

Inexperienced? Almost eight years as agriculture commissioner, eight years in Congress, and four years in the state legislature.
