Your Call: Was 'Deplorables' Remark a Major Hurt for Hillary?

September 13, 2016 - 11:45am

Last Friday night Hillary Clinton wrote off half of Trump’s backers as a “basket of deplorables.”

The Democratic presidential nominee made the comments at an LGBT fundraising event in New York City, and by the next morning the Trump campaign was demanding an apology.

Here's what she said:

“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? (Crowd laughs and applauds.) The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic -- you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people -- now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric.”

Trump now is moving, through television ads and speeches, to seize the brewing resentment among voters over Clinton’s remarks.

Although she went on to characterize other Trump supporters as people who feel powerless, left behind in the economy and desperate for change, the backlash was immediate. Within hours, Clinton sought to dial back, though not retract, her statement.

“Last night I was ‘grossly generalistic,’ and that's never a good idea. I regret saying ‘half’ -- that was wrong," Clinton said in a statement released Saturday afternoon.

She went on to redirect her criticism toward Trump himself for making appeals to bigotry and embracing the support of the white nationalist “alt-right” movement. But Clinton's comments are kept alive in the media and vociferously within the Trump campaign.

So, our question to you is this:

Will Hillary Clinton's 'basket of deplorables' comment hurt or help her campaign?

Comments

Hillary has been displaying ALL of the indications of "onset Parkinson's Disease" (including 'aspiration pneumonia' bouts caused by inhaling food, drink, vomit, medicine, etc. ), the very same disease that cripples and debilitates "Back to the Future" actor Michael J. Fox. This week Hillary's appearance in New York at the 9-11 Memorial was cut short by her inability to stand on her own without the support of her ontourage; But instead of taking her immediately to a nearby hospital, she was taken to Daughter Chelsea's apartment...WHY?...Probably because she has already been diagnosed with "onset Parkinson's" by her personal physician, and her "timeouts" and 'ability & stabilizing' medications, at this point in time, must be administered to her "out of the public eye". [Look up "Parkinson's Disease" and "aspiration pneumonia" for yourselves, and learn what our potential 'presidential candidate' is keeping from her base]

Obama won't call ISIS radical terrorists.

Her comment will not help her or hurt her. A miniscule number of voters may decide to switch their vote to Trump. Hillary's broad and expanding base of Democrats, moderate Republicans, minorities, women, gays will be more energized to get to the polls. Trump will continue to say whatever comes to his mind. He's a "stream of conscious" kind of man who speaks first and analyzes the ramifications of his words later. The die is cast in 2016 and, all bets are on a second Clinton Presidency.

Worked great for Hillary as the fact checkers found out she is right and most people agree ......... And as Trump talks about what she said just reminds them of the far worse, hateful, racist things he has said and based his campaign on.........And you supporters by supporting him and what he says , especially shouting America First last night a racist slogan for the far right neo nazis, etc that love Trump and Trump says he loves, makes you a bigoted racist whether you want to admit it or not. .......... Anyone that wasn't was repelled long ago..... Look how many you have driven from your party that can't stomach you anymore.

This is what she was talking about and she never should have apologized. http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/davidbadash/_hang_the_b_tch_f_g_n_gger_uncensored_video_of_trump_rallies_exposes_culture_he_s_created

Truth hurts. But truth helps polish the lens of the American lighthouse. Deplorable is just that.

Go ahead, try to argue that a large percentage of Trump supporters do NOT fall into at least one of the categories she listed: racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic or islamophobic. Just because you personally may not fall into one of those categories doesn't mean none of Trump's supporters fit those categories. Your argument seems to be that tax paying citizens, veterans or seniors cannot be deplorable. Timothy McVeigh was a veteran who paid taxes, David Duke works and pays taxes and Ken Lay of ENRON worked and paid taxes. David Duke supports Trump and I'd bet McVeigh and Lay would support him too if they were still alive. Can I assume you do not find any of those three "deplorable"? By the way, everybody pays taxes in the U.S. both honest, moral people and dishonest, deplorable people. Everyone is a taxpayer even if all they do is beg for money and buy an occasional bottle of wine. Here's an incomplete list of taxes that citizens pay. Everyone falls into one or more of those categories: Sales and use tax Toll Cigarette and tobacco tax Alcoholic beverage tax Retail Beer, Wine and Liquor License Taxes Tariffs Environment Affecting Tax Real Property Transfer Tax Commercial Motor Vehicle Tax Horse Race Admissions Tax Hotel Room Occupancy Tax Utility tax Insurance taxes Lawful gambling tax Fur clothing tax Deed tax Mineral taxes Gasoline taxes Sports bookmaking tax Wind energy production tax Social security and Medicare taxes Federal unemployment tax Environmental taxes Communications and air transportation taxes Commercial Transportation Fuel taxes Gift taxes Inherited Wealth tax Luxury taxes Income taxes Some people don't pay any income taxes, either because they don't have enough income to reach the level where income taxes become due or, like Trump, they are able to manipulate the system by stretching the truth about real estate values and pay no income tax.

YOU, Bob, are a complete jerk! I am not a member of any of those listed groups of yours, however, even though I've supported Mr. Trump ever since he announced his intentions, my wife had not. That is, until Hillary's completely uneducated and stupid comment. Your ignorance AND membership of one of those groups you mentioned are indicative of some who support Clinton. I could go on and on but, thankfully, my wife has been insulted by Clinton's dumb remark and, as a staunch Democrat, she's actually pissed off enough to consider voting for Trump! Why? Because she insulted every supporter of Trump, including me. GO TRUMP!!

I actually thought her comments were calculated, and a bait. No doubt with social media recording the most vile of responses to her comments, it will probably prove her point. The 20% - 25% of the GOP who is not voting for Trump have probably said the same thing about some Trump supporters, i.e. before she said it, they said it. So maybe the real story is why 20%+ of high propensity decades long voting Republicans feel that way about Trump supporters. As a Republican, I wasn't insulted whatsoever about her comments. I was more concerned she might be directly speaking to those very Republicans from the Party of Lincoln who feel the same way. And although Trump has said he can win without them, and that there is more support for him but people are afraid to voice it, I also fear the opposite is true, especially within the ranks of the GOP. Not kosher, or encouraged to speak against the party's nominee - especially for the grassroots. Time will tell. But the GOP % Hillary needs to vote for her or sit out the top ticket vote, are secretly saying she's right, maybe even some independents. And the Trump supporters she was talking about were never going to vote for her.

Luis, You give Hillary and her team much too much credit for something she flipped off her tongue. I don't believe it was anything more than a non-calculated statement when she appeared to have had enough of Mr. Trump for that day. I just think she lost control and will have to make up the group she lost, and taking days off her campaign for her 'illness' is simply a way to avoid the public AND press. GO TRUMP!!

99% of Trump supporters are tax paying citizens, veterans, or seniors that have worked all our lives.. and she calls us DEPLORABLE ? What has she ever done? She lies and cheats and steals money and breaks every law possible and calls us DEPLORABLE? She is with out doubt disgraceful.. and sickening..

Amen, sister/brother! GO TRUMP!!
