GOP Leadership Urges Rubio Run Again for Senate

With a month left to change his mind, Marco Rubio is facing more pressure to run for a second term in the Senate.

Rubio had been pretty clear during his failed bid for the Republican presidential nomination that he did not plan to run for another term in the Senate. But Republicans are increasingly nervous about losing control of the Senate in November as GOP senators in blue states--Mark Kirk of Illinois, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania--look vulnerable.

On Thursday, CNN reported Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky urged members of the Republican caucus to ask Rubio to run for another term and some members responded.

“I think it would be good for the party, it would be good for the Senate -- I'd like to see him do it," Sen. John Cornyn of Texas told CNN. "I hear a lot of buzz around here from members and others; that's a conversation we need to have."

National Republican Senatorial Committee Roger Wicker of Mississippi also said Rubio should run for another term, telling CNN it is a “very real development" and “within the realm of possibility."

“Marco Rubio is a very valuable member of the Senate ... and earlier this afternoon, I strongly encouraged him to reconsider his decision and seek re-election,"  Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker told The Hill on Thursday.

Rubio dismissed the possibility on Thursday. "I haven't had time to talk to about it but my sense of it is nothing has changed," Rubio told the media.

In the meantime, Republicans have expressed concerns about their field of candidates in Florida who remain largely unknown three months before the primary. The field includes Congressmen Ron DeSantis and David Jolly, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, businessman and Army veteran Todd Wilcox and businessman Carlos Beruff.

If he does change his mind, Rubio has until June 24 to enter the race though his staff downplayed that possibility. Rubio’s decision would also be a blow to his friend Lopez-Cantera. A crowded field of Republicans have lined up to run for DeSantis’ seat while Democrats have high hopes for flipping Jolly’s seat which now leans Democratic after the latest congressional redistricting.

Rubio floundered badly in the Florida primary back in March, beating Donald Trump only in Miami Dade while losing the other 66 counties in the state.

He should quit. He only did half the job when he was there...a product of the ol' Bush establishment. David Jolly is a person who I could vote for. He does everything he says he will do, and actually makes common sense decisions regardless of the party platform. He is a breath of fresh air in politics and actually works everyday. Imagine that...

Sheryl....He has been hard at work taking vacations and calling them work, running up big bills that other people pay for and trying to act like a grown up. He already figured out how to act like one more scumbag politician. Next he will probably have to investigate the gambling problem in Monte Carlo. I admit that since his failed bid to become president that he has showed up for work more. A despicable person and run of the mill politician that got there by accident after the scumbag Chain Gang and George Limieux pulled their scam to "hold the seat for Charlie". I would vote for any other Republican I thought could win. But ya gotta remember that this is Florida and several million people in the south.have Swiss cheese size holes in their brains due to mercury in the water.

He didn't represent us last time. No way will he get my vote this time.

Rubio has been an excellent Senator for FL! He is still working hard for FL and our nation. If you don't see that, then you aren't keeping up with his daily briefings, both in regards to the things he is getting a done in FL, and the things he is still working for in the Senate for the country and our interests. People need to check the facts... Daily... and not just listen to the naysayers, who just like to name - call with no facts.

NEVER for little Marco! A vote for him only sends him on trips to wherever he wants, leaving Florida's taxpayers empty/void of representation, still! Just say NO to....Marco!

Might be one of the few times I disagree with C Breeze. Not in theory or sentiment, Little Marco was a joke as a Senator and has the experience of any young prostitute. I don't like him and would have to hold my nose to vote for him. Putting him back in the Senate would just encourage him to think more highly of himself. On the other hand, I want the Republicans to hold the Senate.

The field of candidates not only are not well known, they are all poor choices. One already lost a senate bid, ones a former lobbyist, the other congressman hasn't served his first term in congress!!! The last is a bussessmsn that's not only contributed to the opponents, but he is very boring. Granted he's loaded but is that all or the best we can do? Oh I firgot the lieutenants governor (like everyone else has)its about time we elect not a millionaire or careerpolitician but one of us an average person. Lets do that now if only that person shows up. Not polished, or overly wealthy. But SINCERE and not looking to make a career of it.unravel the mess and go back home after one maybe two terms.

Be a man of your word!! It is time for new blood. Be it Republican or Democrat. Let it be someone new. Things will never change if we keep recycling the same people over and over.

This is a joke. Right....

I like Marco Rubio. Marco Rubio is a great guy who gave it his all to run for President of the United States. With that said, I think it would be fundamentally unfair to the other Republican candidates if Marco changed his mind and decided to run for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2016. Take some time off Marco. You can always run for the other seat now held by Bill Nelson in 2018.

Marco Rubio is the greatest. It's too bad that the hurricane Donald Trump stood in his way.

I'll NOT vote ever again for the little pandering weasel, Marco Polio !!!!!!! (He's like a young version of "Songbird" McCain, telling you whatever you want to hear (albeit with a "trials and tribulations immigrant family refrain", whenever it suits his purpose).
