Hillary Clinton has a slight lead over Donald Trump in Florida, a new poll finds--and adding Marco Rubio or Jeb Bush to the ticket won’t help Republicans flip the Sunshine State.
Gravis Marketing released a poll of Florida voters over the weekend which shows Clinton ahead in Florida, the largest swing state in presidential politics. Matched up against each other, Clinton leads with 46 percent with Trump taking 42 percent and 12 percent undecided. CBS News also released a poll over the weekend which had Clinton with 43 percent and Trump with 42 percent in Florida.
Doug Kaplan, the president of Gravis, said the Republicans had to carry Florida if they wanted to win back the White House.
“Florida is going to be a huge battleground state for this years presidential election and this state is a must win for the GOP if they have any hope of regaining the White House,” Kaplan said. “In recent weeks, Trump has done a good job of gathering his base while Clinton is still in a hotly contested battle with Bernie Sanders – which is rapidly dividing the Democrat party. If she is able to take the nomination, she’ll have to work hard to win over some of those Sanders supporters to maintain her lead in Florida.”
Both Clinton and Trump are upside down in Florida, the Gravis poll shows. A majority--52 percent--of Florida voters see Clinton as unfavorable while 40 percent view her favorably. Trump is viewed in an unfavorable light by 54 percent of those surveyed while 38 percent see him favorably.
The poll shows Trump would not be helped by adding Rubio or Bush, both of whom he beat in the Republican primaries, to the ticket. Rubio has been downplaying speculation that he could be Trump’s running mate, insisting he is not interested.
Rubio is upside down in the poll with only 20 percent approving of his performance in the Senate while 56 percent disapprove of it. Rubio is not running for a second term this year and has also said he will not run for governor in 2018.
“The polling numbers that should concern the GOP is the lack of support of Marco Rubio,” Kaplan said. “His 56 percent unfavorable rating as a senator should raise red flags to the Trump campaign if they are considering adding Marco Rubio as their vice presidential nominee in order to win Florida. Rubio was definitely damaged by his presidential run. These polls show that we are not convinced that he would help Trump as VP nor that he would necessarily win the primary for governor against other potential GOP nominees.”
Jeb Bush is also upside down in the poll with 53 percent of those surveyed viewing him as unfavorable while 28 percent see him in a favorable light.
President Barack Obama breaks even in the poll with 46 percent of Florida voters approving of him and the same percentage disapproving of him.
The poll of 2,542 registered Florida voters was taken from May 17-May 18 and had a margin of error of +/- 2 percent.
