Stand Your Ground Law Remains Popular With Florida Voters

A new poll from Quinnipiac University finds Florida voters continue to support a stand your ground law more than a year after the Trayvon Martin shooting incident. A clear majority -- 57 percent -- of those surveyed continue to support the law while 36 percent say they oppose it. These numbers are essentially unchanged from when Quinnipiac asked the same question in May and June 2012 and in March 2013: In all three cases, 56 percent said they support the law.

Republicans overwhelmingly support the law, with 75 percent of them backing it. Only 38 percent of Democrats support the law while 57 percent of them oppose it. Independent voters support the law with 59 percent of them backing it while 33 percent oppose it.

Both men and women support the law with 65 percent of men and 51 percent of women backing it. Only 31 percent of men oppose the law while 40 percent of women are against it.

The poll finds Hispanics support the law, with 64 percent backing it and 33 percent opposing it. While 32 percent of whites oppose the law, 61 percent say they support it. Blacks remain opposed to the law with 62 percent against it and 33 percent supporting it.

The poll of 1,176 registered voters was taken from June 11 through June 16 and had a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percent.
