Rick Scott Signs Student Privacy Bill
On Monday, Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill from Sen. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, and Rep. Jake Rayburn, R-Lithia, prohibiting the state from collecting biometrics and ensuring the newly created Florida Student Identification numbers will be used by the Department of Education instead of Social Security numbers.
I want to applaud Gov. Rick Scott for signing and supporting this historic legislation to protect Floridas students and their sensitive personal information, Hukill said on Tuesday. I want to also thank Rep. Jake Rayburn, sponsor of House Bill 195, and members of the Florida Legislature for their support. Floridas children depend on us to do everything possible to ensure that they are safe and that their information is protected. As parents, educators, legislators and citizens we are meeting that challenge and protecting our most precious resources with the passage of this legislation.
