Rick Barber, Mitch Hutchcraft Appointed to South Florida Water Management District Board

Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Frederick Rick Barber and Mitchel A. Hutchcraft to the governing board of the South Florida Water Management District. The governor also reappointed Kevin P. Powers, who was previously appointed by Charlie Crist.

Barber, 66, of Bonita Springs, is the chief executive officer of Agnoli, Barber & Brundage. He has served on the Department of Environmental Protection's statewide stormwater rule technical advisory committee, the budget finance committee of the SFWMD and the Lee County land stewardship acquisition committee. Barber, a Navy veteran, received his bachelors degree from the University of South Florida. He succeeds Daniel DeLisi, and is appointed for a term beginning March 29, 2013, and ending Feb. 25, 2015. DeLisi resigned his seat on the board to become chief of staff of the water agency. Barber will be the representative of Southwest Florida.

Hutchcraft, 46, of Fort Myers, is the vice president of King Ranch. He was previously a member of the Lee County local planning agency for conservation land acquisition. Hutchcraft received his bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Florida. He succeeds Chairman Joe E. Collins, and is appointed for a term beginning March 29, 2013, and ending March 1, 2017. Hutchcraft will fill the traditional agriculture seat, serving the areas of Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, Highlands, Glades, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola and Polk counties.

Powers represents a seat from St. Lucie, Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

The SFWMD is by far the largest of the state's water agencies, serving 16 counties. The agency is also tasked with supervising the colossal undertaking that is Everglades restoration.

The board appointments are subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate. Melissa Meeker, SFWMD's executive director, will also need to pass Senate confirmation. She was not able to attend a March confirmation hearing due to illness.
