Asked about his take on Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, who refuses to issue same-sex marriage licenses despite a U.S. Supreme Court decision, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., called for a “balance” between the law and religious beliefs.
“We should seek a balance between government’s responsibility to abide by the laws of our republic and allowing people to stand by their religious convictions,” Rubio said in a statement to the New York Times on Wednesday.
Rubio said “the clerk’s office has a governmental duty to carry out the law” while insisting “there should be a way to protect the religious freedom and conscience rights of individuals working in the office.”
