League of Women Voters of Florida: These Are Our Nonpartisanship Rules
The League of Women Voters of Florida (LWVF) submitted a letter to Sunshine State News Tuesday clarifying the organization's nonpartisan policy after SSN published a column quoting national LWV rules and claiming LWVF President Pamela Goodman had violated rules by donating to Patrick Murphy while he was running for Congress and she was the League's first vice president.
The Florida LWV claims it has different rules and Goodman was in complete compliance. Here is the letter signed by Pamela S. Goodman, president; and Penny Walker Bos, executive director:
"We are writing on behalf of the board of the League of Women Voters of Florida (LWVF) to give you accurate information about Nonpartisanship Rules of the LWVF. These rules can also be found posted for public record on the LWVF website, www.thefloridavoter.org.
"The rules pertaining to contributions to candidates are found in Rule 3. The rule provides:
"Rule 3. Campaign Contributions.
"The President, Voter Service Chair, and Action Chair may not attend fundraising events or make campaign contributions for candidates. Other board members may attend fundraising events and make campaign contributions for candidates at any level.
"Pamela Goodman was not the President, the Voter Services Chair, or the Action Chair when she made her contribution to Murphy’s Congressional campaign. She has made NO
campaign contributions to any candidate since May 2015, when she was elected President. Therefore, there was no violation of the LWVF’s Nonpartisanship Rules. For over 96 years, this organization at the national, state and local level assures the highest credibility and integrity of nonpartisanship in any candidate debate or forum that they sponsor."
