Kendrick Meek Raises $1 Million
U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek announced on Thursday morning that his campaign for the U.S. Senate had raised more than $1 million from more than 7,000 supporters in the second quarter of 2010.
Meek's camp is arguing that the fact that 85 percent of the donors gave $100 or less shows there is widespread support for its candidate.
But with Meek mired in third place in the polls, far behind independent candidate Gov. Charlie Crist and likely Republican nominee former House Speaker Marco Rubio, the sum he raised was a fraction of the totals that his rivals hauled during the first quarter of 2010 and of what he will probably bring in for the second quarter.
Meek now has around $4 million in the bank -- while Jeff Greene, the billionaire financier who has been in the race for two and a half months and is closely behind Meek, has spent more than $5 million in advertisements.
There have been more than a few stories about Democrats jumping on board the Crist bandwagon -- and Meek's continued poor showing in the polls and lagging behind the field in raising funds is not going to help matters for his campaign.
