Florida TaxWatch: Better College Sports Programs Lead to Academic Success

With college football season about to kickoff, Florida TaxWatch showcased a report on Monday which finds a winning program helps lift universities.

The report finds winning athletic programs boosts universities by bringing in more students, increasing retention and leading to higher graduation rates--all of which could boost Florida's economy.

“Boosting graduation rates at each Florida university would result in a more highly educated workforce,” said Robert Weissert, the senior VP for research at Florida TaxWatch, on Monday. “Reducing the number of students dropping out of Florida colleges means a better prepared workforce, and could reduce unemployment in the Sunshine State.”

Great piece but to correct any misconceptions, this is not a report but rather a newsletter article which raises some very valid and salient points. Bottom line, let's celebrate fall and the beginning of football season. However, at the same time it is good to know that it is about more than fun, it is about aiding in the economic and mental health of our students and residents Go Noles!

Very superficial report (as all of Taxwatch "research"). Academic research has reported very little impact on academics from athletics. This is a myth continually promoted by sports boosters
