Florida Retailers Go to Bat for Rick Scott's Commercial Lease Tax Cut

Going to bat for Gov. Rick Scott’s proposal to cut the commercial lease tax from 6 percent to 5 percent, the Florida Retail Federation (FRF) pointed to a survey showing the importance of the retail industry.

Randy Miller, the new president and CEO of the FRF, noted the National Retail Foundation had a survey showing almost a third of Americans--32 percent--had their first job in retail and 59 percent of all Americans have worked retail. The surveyed also showed 70 percent of hiring managers think retail experience is valuable in any employee.

Miller said the survey shows how important retailers are to the economy and insisted the retail tax cut will help them grow.

“The retail industry continues to provide a tremendous entry-level and growth opportunity for those people looking to start their career or expand their career,” Miller said. “Gov. Scott’s proposed tax cuts for retailers and the business rent tax reduction would provide a significant economic boost for the industry, resulting in more jobs, increased salaries and more opportunities for Floridians overall.”

Miller noted the industry is key to the Sunshine State’s economy with almost 275,000 retailers employing more than 2.7 million Floridians adding $155 billion to the economy.
