Disaster-Area Status Sought for Escambia, Santa Rosa Counties
In a letter late Tuesday, Northwest Florida legislators asked Gov. Rick Scott to immediately declare water-ravaged Escambia and Santa Rosa counties natural disaster areas.
"As you are aware, Escambia and Santa Rosa counties were hit over the weekend with large amounts of rain causing widespread flooding and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate their homes," the letter read.
"You may also be aware that flooding has caused a significant amount of damage to the Escambia County Jail, which incarcerates 600 inmates. Due to the heavy rains, over 5 feet of water has penetrated the inside of the jail facility.
"It is with great urgency that we request your assistance by declaring Escambia and Santa Rosa counties and the areas affected by the rain and flooding as a natural disaster.
"Your immediate response is greatly appreciated."
The letter was signed by Sens. Don Gaetz, R-Destin, and Greg Evers, R-Crestview; and Reps. Clay Ford, R-Pensacola, Matt Gaetz, R-Shalimar; and Clay Ingram, R-Pensacola.
