Dan Gelber: And if I'm elected AG, I Want Less Authority!

Heres something you dont see every day; a politician running for office who wants the post to have less authority. But thats exactly what state Senator Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, is advocating.

Gelber is running for attorney general and he just introduced a bill in the Senate to remove the AG from the board of trustees overseeing the Florida State Board of Administration (SBA) which invests money for hundreds of school districts and government entities across thestate and oversees the pensions for public employees. Gelbers bill would replace the AG with the Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services. While not suggesting that there has been any reason for the AG to investigate the SBA, Gelber maintains that the AG would need to have professional distance from the SBA in case they ever did have to investigate. Gelber also rightly notes that the agriculture post also works for consumers. If Gelbers bill wins approval, since it will amend the state constitution, the matter will go to the voters in November.
