Bill Nelson Wants Feds to Look Again for El Faro's Black Box

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., wants the federal government to conduct another search for the black box of El Faro, the Jacksonville based cargo ship which sunk in a storm on Oct. 1 as it headed to Puerto Rico.

Nelson wrote National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Christopher Hart at the end of last week on the matter.

“It is critical that we determine the cause of the El Faro sinking to prevent tragedies like this from happening again,” Nelson wrote. “I urge you to strongly consider another search to locate the missing recorder.”

Congress needs to appropriate funding for a resumption for the search for the El Faro data recorder. We owe it to the 33 men and women who perished. The voyage data recorder search lasted for ONLY 4 DAYS. The French government searched for 2 YEARS when Air France Flight 447 disappeared in similarly deep water. France found the black box and our searchers will too if given enough TIME AND RESOURCES TO LOOK. Please help the families know what happened to their loved ones and the shipping industry know how to keep a similar tragedy from happening again.
