$26 Billion Stimulus Bundle Passes; Teachers Big Beneficiaries

Republicans didn't like it and most of them -- Florida's delegation included -- didn't vote for it, but on Tuesday afternoon Congress nevertheless approved a $26 billion plan to save thousands of public employees' jobs.

Teachers are among the chief beneficiaries.

The economic stimulus bill is expected to be the last Congress considers before the November election. When the president signs it, it will bring the total direct federal spending on the economy to just over $1 trillion since late 2007.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. called members back from recess to get the job done. She said voters want to see that their Congress is committed to improving the economy.

Before the vote was taken, Rep. Steve Buyer, R-Ind. shouted, "This is a bailout. This is another bailout. ... Let's not do this! We're facing almost a $1.5 trillion budget deficit. America, please, please, wake up. And remember in November."

Buyer's voice may have been heard but it wasn't heeded. The stimulus measure passed 247-161.
